My obsession over Jack Nicholson really started to develop after I saw Michelangelo Antonioni’s The Passenger. I’ve never seen Nicholson in such a freeing, unstructured role. This movie’s beauty can’t understated. It’s a measured, quiet role from Nicholson. I highly recommend 🎂.

Inde Navarrette’s work in Obsession reminded me of Jack Nicholson in The Shining. And before you come at me for being hyperbolic or prisoner-of-the moment, Nicholson is my favorite actor ever & someone I’ve studied my entire life. I don’t hand out Jack Nicholson-comparisons left & right. With all of that said, Inde’s line-delivery, physicality & range reminded of Jack in certain ways. I’m not saying her performance is of the same caliber or that we’ll remember Obsession or her work the same way we do Jack/Kubrick’s. But if you ask me my gut feeling walking out of the theater - or even a few days after seeing it- Navarrette genuinely reminded me of Jack Nicholson because of the way in which she transformed throughout the film. Her character’s lack of free-will gave way to a Nicholson-esque performance.

Originally, Jack Nicholson turned down his role in the movie, but after a meeting with Martin Scorsese, William Monahan, and Leonardo DiCaprio, he was finally convinced to play the role of Frank Costello. The main reason he joined the production was because he had previously done a few comedies, and wanted to play a villain again, and he considered the character of Costello to be the ultimate incarnation of evil. Martin Scorsese really wanted Al Pacino for the role of Costello, because he had never worked with Pacino before, but he turned it down. Jack Nicholson was Scorsese's second choice. The Departed (2006).

It's the great John Candy's birthday so here's a fun story: The night before they filmed this scene from SPLASH, producer Brian Grazer said that John Candy had gone out to party with Jack Nicholson until 5AM the night before, immediately came to set after to film the racquetball scene, and Candy played the character how he really felt: Extremely hungover. Grazer said, "The night with Nicholson, I think he overdid it, so he literally ran into the ball that hit him in the head." Amazing.
