In a few days time we shall mark Hon. PM Narendra Modi’s birthday as a part of #SevaPakhwada2025 . Wish to recall how, based on my experience, I see a strong leader in PM Modi who is caring and compassionate too. The day of my very first budget speech is one I will never forget, though not for the reasons most might expect. I had barely reached home after the Budget speech when my phone rang. It was the Hon'ble Prime Minister. The first words I heard were filled with genuine worry: “Why didn’t you take care of yourself?” Before I could even gather my thoughts, he had already acted. He sent his personal doctor straight to my home, instructing him to run all the necessary tests and make sure I was absolutely fine. What moved me most was that this concern did not fade with time. Even today, every now and then, he reminds me: “Are you looking after yourself? How are you keeping?” For someone who leads a nation, who juggles responsibilities that touch every corner of the country, to remember and worry about the well-being of his colleagues is something extraordinary. People see Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi ji as a strong, serious, and determined leader, and yes, he is all of that. But I have also seen another side of him, one that is tender, thoughtful, and humane. #MYMODISTORY When I was preparing for my movie Rocketry, I got a personal experience of Modi ji’s extraordinary attentiveness. This was right after Uri had released and become a huge success. Modi ji was visiting Mumbai for an event at the, where a lot of people from the film fraternity had gathered. Everyone was eager to meet him and click pictures. I was there too — but not as myself. I was in full look of the great scientist Nambi Narayan ji, whom I was portraying as the lead role. With a big beard and full makeup, I genuinely doubted whether Modi ji would even recognize me. To my absolute surprise, the moment he saw me, he said, “Madhavan ji, you look like Nambi Narayan. Has the shooting of the film started?” I was stunned. Here was the Prime Minister of India, burdened with the responsibilities of the nation and the world, yet he not only recognized me instantly but also remembered exactly what I was working on, despite my drastically different appearance. That day, for the very first time, I took a selfie with him. Coincidentally, both of us had similar beards at the time. It remains one of my most cherished memories—because it showed me that Narendra Modi ji is not just a leader of vision, but a human being who notices, remembers, and values people in the most personal way. I had lost my sister during a Durga Puja. There were no hospitals or medical colleges in my area. That helplessness has never left me. I told this to PM Modi ji once. He listened with full attention. Soon, he gave an AIIMS in our region. It was more than a project. It was a lifeline for our people. I also told him that trains had never reached my region. For generations, people had waited for this. Modi ji made sure the train finally came. It connected us with the rest of the country. What touched me most was his advice. He said development should not stay only in government files. It should live in people’s conversations. When travellers talk in trains, when villagers share during morning walks, when friends chat over tea - that is when the work becomes real. I followed his words. This genuinely hurts to hear... 💔 Modi Ji said “They abused me, and at Jantar Mantar, they even abused my late mother... Yet, I want to forgive them. I neither want to file an FIR against them nor ruin their careers.” At the age of 75, it is difficult to even imagine how painful it must have been to hear such things about himself and his late mother. In fact, a large part of my early years was spent in his company, and his influence on me has been immense. In our family, we don’t call our uncles “Chacha Ji.” We lovingly call him Saba Ji, and for me, he has always been much more than an uncle. James Stewart on what makes a great film performance: In a 1972 BBC interview, the legendary actor was asked how he approaches biographical roles like Glenn Miller and Charles Lindbergh. His answer revealed a philosophy he'd developed over decades in Hollywood. "You have to make a thing believable without using the device of acting. And that doesn't make any sense at all." But then he explained what he meant: "Over the years, I've developed a theory. I'm getting to believe that in films, what everybody is striving for is to produce moments. Not a performance, not a characterization, not something that you get into the part and it's you. You produce moments that create a feeling of believability to what you're doing." Stewart admitted these moments aren't guaranteed. "Sometimes it doesn't go, nothing happens." To illustrate, he shared a story about director Billy Wilder, who was famous for shooting take after take. In one important scene, Wilder had already done 30 takes when one of the actors finally asked what they were doing wrong. Wilder's response: "No, you're doing it fine. I'm just waiting for something to happen." That, Stewart said, is what creating moments looks like in practice. You can't force it. You set the conditions and wait. He then offered a second piece of evidence for his theory, drawn from his interactions with fans over the years: "People will come up to me and say, 'Boy, I like that picture you did.' Now they won't remember the name of the picture. They won't remember where they saw it. They won't remember who was in it or who directed it. But they said, 'You know, that picture. You were in this room and you were some kind of a lawyer or something and this fellow was over there and he turned to you and he said (and I forget what he said) but you looked at him and boy, that look, that was some look.'"
