Teaching the algorithm is comfortable for the teacher because that’s what they learned; however, when a student struggles with it and has no conceptual knowledge to support him, he’s lost.

the comment is basically ignorant, because there is no unique algorithm for virtually any mathematical problem.

A lot of this is inertia from the time when the only way of getting a right answer was having a human do the calculations. This was not so long ago, just a couple generations.

Howie- always enjoy your videos. Do you think the “just teach algorithms” is just a response the delay the algorithms or don’t teach the algorithms approach? Nearly all published math curriculum is mostly multiple strategies and barely algorithms or no algorithms at all.
