I love it when games bind functions to in-world items, like maps with hand-written notes. Rei's notebook from FF3 comes to mind, with little extras like Polaroids.

Ecstatica is one of the first 3D survival horror games, and it was pretty advanced for its time. You can play as either a man or a woman, and it features great graphics, atmosphere, and cool mechanics, like the werewolf (not an ape!) stalking you through the town. It's very brutal and has a twisted sense of humor. Really good game.
