I will always love this training sequence between Luke and Grogu. It’s honestly one of my favorite moments in all of Star Wars. The way it mirrors Luke’s own training with Yoda is just so cool, and I love seeing him in the role of teacher. I also really love the music in this scene. It’s uplifting or hopeful, and just makes me want to go an adventure.

I put it on a credit card and soon learned that Texans with diabetes were rationing, skipping doses, and dying because they couldn't afford it. When I won my race, I brought Democrats and Republicans together to beat Big Pharma, and we capped insulin at $25 per prescription in the state of Texas. Politics is dirty and soul-sucking at times, but if you bring people together, you can actually save people's lives. The fact that there are people walking around in our state because of a bill that I passed makes all of this worth it.

In the foster homes, I was doing extremely poorly in school, mostly because I was changing homes every few months and switching school districts all the time. There was a period when I was doing so badly that my foster mother, my social worker, and my teacher asked the school psychologist to give me an IQ test because they thought I might have a learning disability. I took the test and scored below average overall, but I scored especially low on the verbal section—mainly because I didn’t know how to read. By second grade, when I was seven, I barely knew the alphabet. After the adoption, my grades improved. And one thing I didn’t fully appreciate at the time—but that became obvious when I sat down to write the book—was how closely my academic performance tracked the stability of my life. Whenever things were chaotic at home, my grades plummeted. Whenever there was stability and some degree of adult oversight, they improved. This is something I try to tell people. The data show it, but lived experience makes it very concrete. A kid can be smart—intelligence is probably necessary—but it’s not sufficient. Even if you have the raw ingredients, if everything around you is unstable, that potential gets buried. That was very much my experience in the foster system.

My performance in the game or whatever's happening isn't my identity. Rather, as a disciple of Jesus. That's the foundation of my life and it kind of makes me who I am." That one sentence deserves to sit for a moment. My performance in the game is not my identity. That is one of the hardest things for any athlete to actually believe. The entire sports world is built around performance. Your value is your numbers. Your worth is your contract. Your identity is your stats. And Tommy Edman looked at all of that and said: none of that is who I am. He is a disciple of Jesus. That is his identity. The baseball is just what he does. He also said something that reveals how he maintains that foundation. He studies scripture every day. Not weekly. Not when he feels like it. Every day. And he is actively trying to learn more about Jesus and model his life after Him. That is discipleship. That is not a Sunday morning posture. That is a daily practice of sitting at the feet of the teacher and asking to become more like Him. In a culture that attaches worth to performance and identity to achievement, Tommy Edman is building his life on something that does not move when the batting average drops. "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). Is your identity built on what you do or on who Jesus says you are? This is what it looks like when someone refuses to let their performance define them. Tommy Edman plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the most watched teams in baseball, and he said plainly that his identity has nothing to do with what happens on the field. I love books, and I'm an avid reader, but I just have a hard time because of the way that I perceive. "I've had a great sort of - one side of me anyways - was really satisfied by art and drawing and sculpture and sort of visual expression. And I think that that started to, you know, was the thing that kind of made me feel un-frustrated. And also the way the system was designed, sort of not to support me when I was in high school at that time. "It was very difficult, you know, there was a lot of, you know, just, difficulty. My English teacher in high school was worried about what my career would be, and I'm like. He would be happy to know that I'm in the Writers Guild of America now. "But, I think that that all those things are, they're all... you can transcend all those things with perseverance and with interest and with with help.
