Chris, they chose to spend their money on extending Jose rather than pretending to sign another "productive bat" to help them win a WS. They will again, compete for a division, and do it while finding out which young prospects in this organization can play.

This is just the money they owed him from the first contract that he agreed to forgo under the impression the team would spend money. They did the opposite so he called them out after the season.
