The Online Safety Act has had a chilling effect on free speech. It has been made worse by the fact that two vital free speech protections have still not been implemented — even though the Act became law three years ago. More than 50 peers — including three former Cabinet Ministers — have signed a letter from the Free Speech Union’s General Secretary, Lord Young, to the Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall, calling on her to implement these protections. The concern centres on duties in the Act to protect journalistic content and content of democratic importance which have not yet been commenced. Legitimate and lawful social media posts have already been censored — most concerningly, a speech on the grooming gangs scandal by Conservative MP and Shadow Home Office Minister Katie Lam. Even spiked’s documentary on online censorship was censored on X. It’s time for Liz Kendall to instruct Ofcom to get on with protecting free speech.
