Bombers star Zach Merrett says he never lost faith in Essendon, despite his push for a move to rivals Hawthorn, which fell flat in the dying minutes of the AFL Trade Period. Merrett has returned to the club and admitted the first 30 minutes when he walked through the doors was a "little bit awkward" but is keen to move on ahead of the 2026 season.

Merrett spent some time as a high Half Forward coming up to the contest during todays match sim. Zach played exceptionally well. His standard is first class. At times young Jacob Farrow matched up with him coming of Half Back. Great lessons learnt from one of the all time greats. I suspect we will see Caldwell, Merrett, Parish and Durham all spending time playing a similar role rotating between the onball and High HF this year. Farrow also did some very nice things. #godons #essendonfc #Bombers Essendon FC #afl 🖤❤️👊

Scott confirms that it was his view the club should have let Zach leave and take the trade package. He also confirms the club had previously made the decision to embark on a rebuild strategy. If that is the case, i'd be very surprised if Matt Rosa would not have preferred pick 10, 22 and a F1 in lieu of a disgruntled 31yo. So the question that needs to be asked is who made the decision to reject the trade and force Zach to stay? I think it is fairly clear that newly appointed President Andrew Welsh made the 'captains call'. He wanted to present a strong front and not be seen to be catering to a high profile trade request. This decision was made out of emotion and not strategy. He now has the temerity to say it was not a mistake to force Zach to stay d.t to the 'protection on field' he is providing. Will Setterfield could've done that. Whilst i'm not denying the importance of on field leadership/experience, there's no denying Essendon would be much better off moving forward with those picks. In light of Scott's comments the Q needs to be put to Welsh, was his first move as President to override the LM + Coach and veto a Merrett trade?
