Naguib Sawiris is right: the UAE proved that it remains a safe haven even under direct attack. Despite waves of Iranian missiles and drones, the country preserved its security, protected its people, and maintained confidence in its economy. While others bowed to pressure, the UAE demonstrated resilience, strength, and...

HOW THE UAE BECAME LIKE THE COUNTRY IT DESTROYED Under the cover of the US Empire, the UAE was able to preserve its reputation for safety while putting its wealth towards exporting destruction to the Global South. But today, the UAE is learning a bitter lesson, as the same Empire that protected it brings war to its doorstep. "Those expensive buildings... nobody will enter them but the cats," said Hemedti, the commander of the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, in 2019 as he threatened to empty Sudan's capital city Khartoum. By 2023, he did exactly that: triggering the world's worst displacement crisis. The UAE continued to launder its reputation as a "safe haven" even as it bankrolls a g*nocide in Sudan. Shortly before launching the UAE-backed war, Hemedti threatened it would "rain hailstones" of bullets on Sudan. Today, as Iran retaliates against the US-Israeli axis, it is Iranian drones raining on the UAE. In desperate attempts to preserve the dying illusion of safety, the UAE is trying to block the circulation of videos exposing the reality. But it is futile. The whole world can see how the UAE is beginning to mirror the country it destroyed. Amid the world's worst famine, the UAE-backed RSF uses starvation as a weapon. Now, Emirati supermarket shelves are rapidly emptying. The UAE bombed Sudan’s oil depots and airports. Today, Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest, has been brought to a standstill. Just as the UAE wrecked Sudan's fragile economy, their own is in peril: Dubai’s stock market is in freefall, its tourism industry is in danger, its AI superpower ambitions are flatlining, and the mega-rich are seeking to move their assets. The ultimate irony is that the UAE cannot even export the gold it loots from Sudan. An Emirati billionaire who endorsed normalisation with Isr*el now asks who authorised the war. But he never questioned his own government’s authority to turn Sudan into a graveyard. As life slowly returns to Sudan, it is being sucked out of the UAE. The cats are changing addresses.
