That's just Oda taking inspiration from and making reference to an iconic adventure stories, there are lots of other stories that you can find references to throughout One Piece as well. Treasure Island, Journey to the West, Don Quixote, The Lost City of Atlantis, Dante's Inferno, Dante's Divine Comedy, Gulliver's Travels, Peter Pan, etc, etc.
