Naira Marley was on to something here…

For more context, this was sent by one of my mutuals: The piece (below) highlights the contextual etymological relationship between the word “ba” and “ba-ba” for those who might find it relevant. “Ọkà bàbà (sorghum) fermentation is a traditional African process, often used to make Ogi Baba (a fermented porridge), involving soaking cleaned sorghum grains in water for 2–5 days. Lactic acid bacteria and yeast digest sugars during this time, creating a sour taste, distinctive aroma, and bubbles before the grain is blended, sieved, and cooked into a nutritious, thick porridge.” Sann, A. I., Asiedu, M., & Ayernor, G. S. (2001). Influence of processing conditions on the nutritive value of Ogi-baba, a Nigerian fermented sorghum gruel. Plant foods for human nutrition (Dordrecht, Netherlands), 56(3), 217–223.

You speaks so well ma

This video was inspired by @omoduduwa 💕

Sc credit 🙌🏽: @Omolomo_o

I just watched this on threads and I was coming to ask you why you don't post these things on X 😊

I do occasionally. Here is too toxic. 😂

It's toxic o 😂

@AmodaOgunlere I love this conversation! I am such a huge fan of gut friendly local foods. I love our fermented food so much 💚

@AmodaOgunlere Definitely. For example, Omidun is such a great alternative to those looking for priobiotics rather expensive foreign yoghurt. It's also dairy free. It can also be used as a starter for fermenting yoghurt.

@Temitayomab @AmodaOgunlere What is omidun 🙏?

@Temitayomab @AmodaOgunlere Fermented ogi water

The best Yoruba word for fermentation is "TÍTORÓ" ( MRM )

Please explain further

The process of getting it fermented is "BÀ Á" After it fermented, it is called "TORÓ"

🤝🏽

I beg to differ, Naira Marley didn't coin that word. Yorubas have been saying it for as long as I've been aware of being a Yorùbá girl. It's a Yoruba phrase I grew up hearing folks in my clan speak.

I didn't say he coined it o. It's a saying I've never hear of and by using it in a song, it's been preserved.

Okay. Took you out of context. But you made it sound as though he's the originator of the phrase.

@nla_agba I think ferment is ó kan as in omiídùn tàbí omi ògì tó kan (Fermented pap water). Ó kan is also English for sour, as in ọbẹ̀ ti kan (the soup has soured). Bàjẹ́ is damaged or spoilt. So I would translate bà to almost spoilt/damaged or in word redeemable.

@nla_agba I know kàn means sour but I've truly never heard it used in context for ferment. Someone said they use di bà to refer to fermenting cocoa. How about ọkà bàbà 🤔

@naija1babe Ba is actually correct. We ferment cocoa and we say Ba Cocoa.

@yorubachic Not quite, we also use ba for obí (kolanut) and yet we kolanut does not ferment. Bi ba obi tàbí kòkó is simply removing the seeds/nut from the pods for storage.

@nla_agba Always appreciate your contributions. 🙌🏽Someone said bitter Kola is fermented. Is that true?

@nla_agba Bitter kola (orogbo) is not fermented. It's a bitter nut with very thin skin similar to groundnut skin. I have never seen it stored when freshly harvested but when dry, the skin peels off easily just like groundnut skin.

@nla_agba Ẹ ṣé pupọ 🙌🏽

Eleyi tun fine yato o, oyin e o ni kan oo

It's a line I have heard people use and used interchangeably myself. Didn't know the Ba meant ferment o. Thought it was a colloquial expression meaning it's just at the ba stage it has not bajẹ.OMG

@adeoluorisa E ferment e no spoil 😮💨. Beautiful intelligence

Nice

See me smiling

Great work Oyinda ❤️

I will not lie, I miss @officialnairam1 in this music industry, I have been listening to his new releases, dope sounds and lyrics but the industry has chosen to silent him, quite unfair but we all understand. I pray he comes back with this proverbial lyrics and sound.

Some fermented products in Yoruba cuisine: iru, ogiri, ogi baba, omidun, oguro / emu, fufu, lafun ... what did i miss..

@AmodaOgunlere Beautiful voice 😍

Beautiful composition. The introduction with Naira's song was on point. Your contents are very thoughtful.

It's normal Yoruba

@Magixlamy_ Is Naira not a 1st class students?

Going thru naira Marley songs recently, I think we were to quick to throw the baby with the bath water . He wasn't perfect , but Yorubas should hv stood firm and by him more. I Wish he get the grace he deserves .

My sista your face fresh kpai☺️

@AmodaOgunlere Obanikobaje.

Omi titoro is ferment

What dialect is this?

Lolz onko

@officialnairam1 you did something!!

You don spoil this fine lecture abi sermon, by telling us about your personal feelings about his songs. I thought you're protecting the heritage? You for just leave am the way you said it at first. Una sef🙄

Never saw it that way. “O ba ni, ko bajè”. Thanks for explaining.

We were singing the song without knowing the meaning 😂😂😂... O ba ni kobaje. Omo iya mi mo wa pelu e. Stay happy and shey jeje...

You self no small @yorubachic the moment you mention the lyrics line I grab it

"O ba ni, ko bajẹ." is popular word phrase Yoruba use to reafirm their hope on something or issue that seem to be collapsing.

Are you and your husband behind the dating app YETUNDE?

No, we're not.

O ba ni ko baje
