Dear Karen Spilka and Elizabeth Warren, I didn’t write and publish Food Stamp Warrior, claiming to be a tough guy. In fact, the opposite is true. I wrote the book to show that even though I grew up in a rough neighborhood and joined the Marines, unexamined trauma from one’s past can break even those perceived as tough and strong. In my book, I shared that I was brutally and repeatedly raped as a child over a period of two years but never sought therapy or even acknowledged what had happened to me. I buried feelings of shame and guilt inside me for over 40 years. For any rape victim, it is very difficult to admit and share to the world that you were violently raped. For a man, especially a man perceived by many, including his young daughters, to be strong and tough, being raped can carry an additional burden, even if the burden is self-imposed. In my book, I actually share that I’m not so tough after all and that the violent rapes hurt and damaged me. I tell people not to make the same mistake I made and to timely seek out professional therapy. I explain that it does not make a person weak to ask for help. It saddens me that you both missed the core message of my book.

This week I participated in the Rome Summit on Ethics and Artificial Intelligence inside Vatican City. I shared that we do not fear AI—nor do we think AI is the solution to every problem. Part of our message has also been that a faith and ethics AI evaluation will help ensure that every person of faith—and their beliefs—can be portrayed accurately, honestly, and with respect.
