The argument appears to be that because billionaires, former governors, ministers and legislators are members, ordinary citizens should keep their pockets firmly shut. That is a rather peculiar understanding of democratic organisation. There is nothing remotely objectionable about members contributing according to their capacity. Indeed, modest subscriptions can foster ownership, strengthen party structures and reduce dependence on a few wealthy benefactors. Political parties are built not merely by prominent financiers but by the cumulative commitment of their membership. Nigeria has an instructive historical precedent. Under the Action Group and later the UPN, Papa Awolowo led organisations that attracted wealthy and influential businessmen, including Chief Gbadamosi, Rewane, Adetola and Bank Anthony. Yet ordinary members paid their dues. The presence of affluent supporters did not extinguish the financial responsibility of the rank and file. Nor is the principle peculiar to Nigeria. British political parties raise funds through membership subscriptions and individual donations, while American parties similarly receive contributions from individuals within statutory limits. So what exactly is objectionable about asking a party member who believes in a political cause to contribute ₦1,000 or ₦2,000? Nothing whatsoever. Let the billionaires give billions and let ordinary members give what they can. The essential safeguard is transparency, accountability and proper stewardship of every contribution.
