Scary Facts About Bison That Few People Know From a distance, bison look like gentle, slow-moving creatures peacefully grazing on the prairie. Their thick fur, massive shoulder hump, and calm eyes lead many people to think they are simply a wild version of domestic cattle. But the truth is completely the opposite. Bison are among the most dangerous and unpredictable animals in North America — and also one of the species that came closest to being wiped off the face of the Earth in the most tragic way. First, let’s talk about their size and strength. An adult male bison can weigh from 900 to over 1,000 kilograms, with some individuals reaching nearly 1,500 kilograms. They stand about 1.8 to 2 meters tall at the shoulder. With such a massive body, it’s easy to assume they are slow and clumsy. In reality, they can run at speeds of 55–60 km/h — faster than most horses and about three times the top running speed of a human. Not only are they fast, but they are also extremely agile — capable of jumping nearly 1.8 meters straight up and spinning around quickly to face a threat. Even more frightening is how unpredictable bison can be. They can stand completely still and appear calm, then suddenly switch into attack mode within just a few seconds. One important warning sign that few people know about is their tail. When the tail hangs loosely and swishes gently, the bison is calm. But if the tail stands straight up, it is a clear warning signal: a charge is about to happen. Beyond their physical power, the history of bison also carries a dark and terrifying tone. Just over a century ago, they dominated the North American prairies with an estimated population of 30 to 60 million. Yet within only a few decades at the end of the 19th century, the population was nearly wiped out. By the 1890s, fewer than 1,000 wild bison remained. They were slaughtered in massive numbers for their hides, their bones (which were ground into fertilizer), and for political reasons — to cut off the livelihood of the Native tribes who depended on them. This is considered one of the largest animal massacres in human history. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, bison numbers have recovered significantly. They remain powerful wild animals, with almost no natural predators daring to attack a healthy adult — except for wolf packs or grizzly bears in special circumstances. Their comeback is proof of their incredible resilience, but it is also a reminder that the quiet appearance of nature sometimes hides tremendous power. So when you look into the deep eyes of a bison, remember that you are standing before a creature that once ruled the prairie, came within a breath of vanishing forever, and still carries its wild instincts fully intact to this day.
