It could lead to many poor people improving their living conditions. That’s if small businesses could actually afford it. A $50 minimum wage would likely exacerbate inflation. It would put many businesses out of business. It would create a huge spike in unemployment. It would also make more businesses move in the direction of automation.

I tried to raise the minimum wage to $15/hr. Not ONE Republican supported it. A $7.25/hr minimum wage is an absolute disgrace. Americans should not be forced to work for starvation wages. We must raise the wage to at least $17/hr.

I co-introduced historic legislation to increase the minimum wage to $25. As someone who taught economics at Stanford, here is why it makes sense. The real minimum wage was $14 in 1968. Today it is half, but productivity has increased 2.5x. Instead of extractive capitalism, we need a free enterprise system that pays workers what they are worth.

The City of San Diego just passed a $25/hr minimum wage for some hotels, Sea World and Petco Park, but not for city workers. According to the City Council, employees at these businesses deserve a “living wage,” but what about workers at the other businesses? What about the workers at City Hall? The City acknowledged they can’t expand this to workers at City Hall because it’s too expensive. If the City is unwilling to subject themselves to their own policy, maybe it’s just bad policy.

We need to protect the water below it from Wall Street and Silicon Valley who are already scheming to buy up our farmers’ water rights for their data centers. The Ogallala Aquifer took thousands of years to fill. It belongs to Nebraska families, not tech billionaires.
