The hidden trap: In 1978, a NASA scientist named Donald Kessler ran a calculation that space agencies have feared ever since. He found there is a threshold. Once you pack enough satellites into orbit, a single collision stops being an accident and becomes a chain reaction. How it works: Objects in orbit travel at roughly 17,000 miles per hour, which is FASTER than a rifle bullet. At that speed, even a fleck of paint hits with the force of a bullet. So when two satellites collide, they shatter into thousands of pieces, and every single piece becomes a hypersonic bullet of its own. Each of those pieces can strike another satellite, which explodes into thousands more. One collision becomes ten. Ten become a hundred. A hundred become a thousand. Tyson warns that within just a few orbits, this cascade could wipe out close to 100% of the satellites around Earth. Now think about what those satellites run... There is no GPS without them, which means no Google Maps, no ride-sharing, and no navigation. As Tyson put it, there is no Uber without GPS. There is no high-speed internet for ships, planes, remote towns, or entire militaries. There is no reliable weather forecasting and no global financial timing. The invisible backbone of modern life runs through a few thousand machines in orbit, and we are stacking them closer together every year with no traffic rules and no cleanup crew. And it has already begun: Four countries have already blown up their own satellites just to flex their military power. The US, China, Russia, and India have all done it, and every one of those tests scattered thousands of fresh bullets into orbit. Tyson even joked that if aliens ever came to visit, they took one look at the cloud of junk we wrapped around our own planet and decided it was not worth the risk to land. Every player already knows the danger. The problem is that the same logic that fills the sky also traps everyone inside it. Starlink is worth a fortune. Global satellite internet is worth a fortune. Military control of orbit is priceless. So everyone keeps launching, because the first one to stop simply hands the lead to a rival. No country will slow down, because no law forces them to and there is no reward for going first. So we keep running the same experiment on the one thin layer of space that every phone, map, market, and military on Earth depends on. We are simply betting that nobody triggers the first big collision. The scary part is that it only has to happen ONCE. Daily reminder that if you google "satellite in space", every picture it shows you is computer-generated. Tens of thousands of them are supposedly up there careening around at an incomprehensible 17,000 MPH (10x the speed of a speeding sniper rifle bullet) in every direction randomly, yet you never see a single one in space walk footage. The astronauts also don't seem too concerned that they or their craft could be instantaneously vaporized at any second by one of these flying machines of death, that are moving so fast the human eye couldn't even see it. Does this make any sense at all to you?

The solar panels that you need on a 100 kW satellite platform are about the size of a football field." "So think about having a football field indoors for each satellite. .delian says Varda Space will ultimately build the first industrial city in orbit. He breaks down how they'll get there: "We want to build the first industrial city in low-Earth orbit. But we're taking it one step at a time. Building out the business, getting great unit economics, proving out one use case at a time." "Generation 1 of what we're building is this two-part spacecraft — satellite and pod. The satellite has all the process equipment. The pod just has the finished good. When we're done, the pod survives, but all that process equipment and everything on board burns up." "Generation 2 will be flying in 2029. Think of it as that heat shield material just envelops everything. So now the satellite plus the pod both survive. That'll probably look like a mini space plane." Even ships at sea or aircraft in the sky can receive high speed internet service. Over 2/3 of the active satellites in orbit are Starlink now. And it won't create any long term trash in orbit. The orbits are so low (480 km to 550 km) that even if SpaceX were to lose control of one, the small satellites will run out of fuel within 5 years. Then they get dragged back into the atmosphere and burn up. Every satellite is in a lane to avoid other Starlink satellites. They all are connected to a collusion avoidance system and can make small course adjustments if needed. Starlink can provide high speed internet anywhere on the planet without having to bury expensive fiber cables underground or undersea. A space satellite is launched into orbit using a powerful rocket that lifts it through Earth’s atmosphere at speeds over 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 km/h).
