Professor Bill McGuire Bill McGuire is Emeritus Professor of Geophysical & Climate Hazards at University College London. A volcanologist by training, he has advised the UK Government on natural hazards, served on the government’s Natural Hazards Working Group after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and on SAGE during the 2010 Icelandic volcanic ash crisis. He was a contributing author to the IPCC’s Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters (SREX) and is an internationally recognised expert on climate change, geological hazards and extreme weather impacts.

The cause: Likely due to a Glacier Lake or dam in the mountain’s above bursting free from a snow-rock landslide, with water cascading down the hills. It took place on the Nepal-China border - that was initiated by a 4.4 Earthquake. That’s where the evidence points now, and if so, it’s called a Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). They are more common now-a-days as glaciers continue to melt and hold more water. See image below.
