Netanyahu has launched an attack on Iran that most (and certainly I) consider illegal under international law: he claims an imminent threat to Israel for which there is no evidence (and the US intelligence agencies say there is no evidence for).

It is becoming clearer what has happened in the Middle East over the weekend, and over the last week. A 🧵

The echoes with Iraq in 2003 boom across the decades: A lack of intelligence, which is then doctored to fit the political narrative, to justify an illegal war. The @LibDems were right then; and we are right now.

Now, of course, Trump has got involved. Netanyahu has been trying to get the US to directly attack Iran for decades - finally Trump is the US President too weak and too easy fo manipulate to do it. 👏👏👏

And whilst no one would disagree that the US military has accomplished a tactical feat with its operation, we now hear from VP Vance that they didn’t even get the Uranium, they don’t know where it is, and they are not sure how much they have damaged the Iranian nuclear programme.

To summarise: Israel and the US have conducted an illegal attack on Iran, which didn’t even achieve its military objectives.

So what about the UK in all this?

Watching Starmer and Lammy dance on the head of a pin when asked if this is illegal tells you all you need to know: They know the attack was illegal (their own legal advice says so) but don’t have the moral clarity nor guts to say so. There will come a time, soon enough, when the UK will depend on international law, and it won’t be there for us because we will have destroyed it.

The one thing they are saying which is correct is that the only way to deal with Iran’s nuclear programme is through negotiation - this is what the UK, the US, and other international partners were trying to do when Israel launched its illegal attack.

The UK needs to stay a million miles away from this unsuccessful, illegal war.

You can find the whole segment on @GMB here. With thanks to @edballs for playing a walk-on part from a previous UK government that launched a disastrous, illegal war based on dodgy intelligence. Let’s hope the current UK government is learning from that debacle.

Cool. Did you speak about intl law while Hezbollah/Houthis/Hamas were firing Iranian sponsored missiles at Israeli towns and villages for the past 2 decades? Or only when Israel defends itself?
