Neuralink’s new approach inserts ultra-thin electrode threads directly through the intact dura and into the cortex....without cutting the dura open This is a huge surgical milestone The dura is the tough protective membrane covering the brain. Normally, reaching the cortex means cutting through that layer....one of the most delicate...

NEURALINK JUST MADE A MAJOR SURGERY BREAKTHROUGH Neuralink has updated its surgical procedure and completely removed a key step. Instead of removing the dura (the tough protective membrane around the brain), the implant threads now go directly through the dura without needing to take it out. This change makes the surgery: • Less invasive • Faster • Safer • Much easier to scale to more patients

The dura is the brain's armor: a membrane so tough that a surgeon normally cuts through it with a scalpel. For the first time in our clinical trials, we inserted the electrode threads of our implant straight through the dura and into the cortex, keeping the dura intact. Here's how we did it 🧵

Elon Musk explains one of the most optimistic futures imaginable: Neuralink and Optimus restoring lost human abilities through real-world cyborg technology And the first people this could help are the ones who need it most: People who are paralyzed. People who are locked in. People who lost the ability to move, speak, or interact with the world normally like Stephen Hawking Neuralink is already helping patients control computers and robots with their thoughts "They can now communicate almost as quickly as we are communicating right now" “That’s going to continue to accelerate” But Elon’s next vision is even bigger: Use Neuralink to read motor-cortex signals from the brain, combine that with sensory feedback from the somatosensory cortex, and connect it to Optimus-style robotic limbs In simple terms: A person who lost their legs could one day control robotic legs with their mind - just pure thought. No buttons or joysticks Elon called it a real-life “Six Million Dollar Man” concept… but instead of being science fiction or insanely expensive, it could cost around $60,000 Neuralink gives the brain a digital output. Optimus gives the body robotic capability Together, they could create a path for people to walk again, move again, communicate again, and regain independence they thought was gone forever This is the future worth building

🇺🇸 A human hand is too clumsy for this, but Neuralink’s robot is built to put electrode threads into a living brain. It's thinner than hair, and made to perform on your brain The machine watches the blood vessels and threads the gaps. This is not a concept video... the future is here. Neuralink / Writer: Val

Eli Katoa’s brain bleed that required surgery is as serious as it gets - a medical emergency that could have had catastrophic consequences. We look at: - 3 blows to the head - the main mechanisms of injury - a surgery that requires part of the skull to be removed to gain access to the brain - comparisons to Te Maire Martin (who took 3 years off footy) - recovery possibilities Again, thoughts are with Katoa as he recovers.

“The Blindsight device from Neuralink will enable even those who have lost both eyes and their optic nerve to see. Provided the visual cortex is intact, it will even enable those who have been blind from birth to see for the first time. Neuralink Device threads will go through the dura, without the need to remove it. This is a big deal. With Neuralink implant interfacing directly to the visual cortex, even those who are completely blind will be able to see again. Computer vision will be limited at first, like early computer graphics but ultimately will exceed the best human eyes.” — Elon Musk

What is a brain-computer interface? BCIs allow your brain to communicate directly with external electronics—bypassing the rest of the body entirely to let users control tablets or prosthetic limbs using only their thoughts. More on Primer

This perspective will be more intuitive. Fourier is building a data acquisition and training platform that integrates non-invasive brain-computer interfaces and humanoid robots. This wealth of data will enhance the intelligence level of GR-3. The goal is for GR-3 to accurately identify the brain intention signals of stroke patients during future rehabilitation training and respond in real time to guide patients in performing rehabilitation movements. For example, lifting the left hand, picking up a block from the table, etc. Of course, GR-3 can also become a life assistant controlled by a human BCI. Imagine that people with mobility impairments could also issue commands to GR-3 via BCI to open the refrigerator and get a drink.

Neuralink just released a major new update on how it is training brain-computer interfaces Participants have now generated more than 50,000 HOURS of unlabeled neural data Neuralink is now pretraining neural encoders on thousands of hours of each participant’s brain activity before using them for cursor control And the results are already impressive: • Calibration time dropped from ~55 minutes per week to ~10 minutes for some participants • Multiple participants set new personal BCI speed records • Three participants surpassed the previous 10.39 bits/sec benchmark • One participant reached 11.32 bits/sec — a new BCI record • Some decoders stayed strong for weeks • One decoder was still usable more than 1.5 years later The most important part is what comes next Neuralink is moving toward foundation models for BCI...systems that can learn from massive amounts of neural data and eventually generalize across people and tasks The goal is to make brain-computer interfaces faster, more stable, require less calibration and eventually work more like a general-purpose platform Neuralink is going from controlling a cursor To building an interface between the brain and computers at scale

Max Hodak (Max Hodak) is the co-founder of Neuralink and founder of Science Corporation, a company building brain-computer interfaces that can restore sight. Science has developed a tiny retinal implant that stimulates cells in the eye to help blind patients see again. More than 40 patients have already received the treatment in clinical trials, including one who recently read a full novel for the first time in over a decade. Neuralink today unveiled its next-generation surgical robot. It's able to insert threads into the brain in 1.5 seconds vs 17 seconds in their previous gen surgical robot. This new surgical robot is also now compatible with 99% of the global human population. They've also increased the depth the needle can insert threads and can reach more than 50mm from the surface of the brain. The needle cartridge is now 95% less expensive to make vs previous version.

Stanford just created a HUMAN-MOUSE CHIMERA whose cerebral cortex is 92% HUMAN BRAIN TISSUE. This is getting OUT OF CONTROL… Mad scientists are now growing living human brain tissue inside animals until it occupies nearly their ENTIRE CEREBRAL CORTEX. They genetically engineered mice to develop without most of their cerebral cortex, then filled the missing region with HUMAN BRAIN ORGANOIDS. The human brain tissue expanded nearly FIVEFOLD, eventually accounting for 92% of the animals' cortical tissue. The human neurons developed electrical activity, integrated into the mouse's nervous system, and extended nerve fibers all the way into its SPINAL CORD. Electrical activity in the HUMAN BRAIN TISSUE was associated with the mice's facial movements. The chimeric mice also demonstrated WORKING MEMORY, performing above chance on a memory test that mice lacking most of their cerebral cortex failed. This is straight out of a dystopian nightmare.

Just met with camroo ahmed who has built a system for brain surgeons that uses augmented reality and AI to more accurately display brain tumors. Done about 100 surgeries already and mistake rates go way down, which saves massive amounts of money since these surgeries cost more than $100k each. Nice to see Magic Leap is still being used. Has implications on future of robotics surgery and further understanding the brain for brain/computer interfaces. I got a demo after I turned off the camera and it lets a surgeon “slice” the brain to more accurately see the tumor and figure out how to best get cutting tool to the tumor. Love seeing AI being used to help make surgeons have super human powers.
