Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, is one of the most photographed and visited castles in the world. It famously inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle and draws over 1.3 million annual visitors.

Segovia has a similar one but older. The city has also other beautiful ancient and medieval buildings, as the Acueduct and Cathedral.

Neuschwanstein is not an authentic medieval castle but rather a product of German romanticism built in the 1880s by order of King Ludwig II of Bavaria who was a friend of the great German composer Richard Wagner. There are only 2 authentic intact castles of the 12th century.

I will never understand the excitement over Neuschwanstein. We have thousands of beautiful castles and fortresses in🇩🇪and hundreds are much more fascinating than this Disney version. Visit the real gems like Schweriner Schloss, Burg Eltz, Burg Hohenzollern, Festung Königstein....

That's a fantasy, neo-romantic castle, just for the looks. There are many beautiful, real castles in Germany, e.g. the "Reichsburg Cochem", a toll castle above the town Cochem guarding the below Mosel river, an important trade route. Built in the first half of the 12. century.

Funny how people absolutely adore these buildings across the world, and yet... we don't build them any more!! Instead we build horrific skyscrapers that are just skidmarks on the landscape. Build beautiful again!!

Beautiful but a 19th-century replica of a medieval fantasy. Does the fake history ever bother you?

I've been so many times. My best tip: buy your tickets online and have them at will call, the line is much shorter if you pre-order tickets. If you don't you better show up very early. Tours fill quickly and the line is LONG.

Fun fact. This castle was one of the main inspirations for Sleeping Beauty’s castle at Disneyland.
