That flat surface gives you a good indication of its luster, which can help you identify the mineral! Quartz has a nonmetallic glassy luster! (my geology recollection is hazy)

The coolest thing is that she will never forget this...the most fun I had was huntin geodes in Galena KS with my grandad who was a petroleum geologist who loved to go rock hunting. Fun times...miss good ol grandad
