She says this has happened to her multiple times at different petrol pumps. As soon as she arrives, the staff call her “Madam, madam, come here.” At first she thought it was special treatment. Later she realized they assume women are easy to fool. They start small talk about her scooter to distract her. Meanwhile she keeps her full attention on the meter. She clearly tells them to fill the tank. But they first fill a small amount and say “Done madam, ₹50.” She corrects them and says she asked for full tank. They continue filling while again distracting her with conversation. When the total reaches around ₹420, she pays that amount. Then they say “Madam, you only paid ₹420, what about the ₹50 from before.” That is when she realizes the trick. They try to make you pay twice for the same fuel. She confronts them on the spot and they back off. She says this has happened to her 4 or 5 times. According to her, they assume women won’t notice and try to make extra money.

One Friday, I was bringing Shabbat dinner to Holocaust survivors when I met Edith. Edith is a 98 year old survivor from Austria. She lost every single member of her family. Edith's family made the unimaginable decision to give her away to another family that was able to flee. She told me about the last time she saw her father as he put her on a train and collapsed. She never saw her family again. When she got to the UK, the family that said they would care for her abandoned her. She grew up completely alone. But she figured it out. She wound up having a successful career, finding a great husband, and moving to America. At the end of our conversation, she goes back to work and we make a date to meet for ice cream.
