Many residents of Odesa have been without electricity for six days now, and some are also without heating and water, following a Russian attack on the city on December 13. Online, messages and comments of support for Odesa are spreading. Many people send charged powerbanks to Odesa or invite people to stay with them. I’ve put together a compilation of videos showing how Odesa residents are coping with the lack of electricity with creativity and good spirits.

One Friday, I was bringing Shabbat dinner to Holocaust survivors when I met Edith. Edith is a 98 year old survivor from Austria. She lost every single member of her family. Edith's family made the unimaginable decision to give her away to another family that was able to flee. She told me about the last time she saw her father as he put her on a train and collapsed. She never saw her family again. When she got to the UK, the family that said they would care for her abandoned her. She grew up completely alone. But she figured it out. She wound up having a successful career, finding a great husband, and moving to America. At the end of our conversation, she goes back to work and we make a date to meet for ice cream.
