Caller: We're doing our taxes and last year we had $316,000 in capital losses. We were told that we could only deduct $3,000 a year on our taxes, but I did the math and that would take 115 years Dave Ramsey: So it sounds like the type of losses that you have is what's causing the write-off—the inability to write them off, because you don't have any income that is of similar sources to the losses. Caller: Right. Dave Ramsey: It sounds like you need short-term income on investments, not long-term capital gains on investments to offset this. What was this from? What's the loss from? Caller: from trading. From doing trades. Dave Ramsey: Jesus. What is your household income? Caller: For last year, it was only, $38,000. This year it's going up. My husband got a new job starting at $50,000 plus. Dave Ramsey: Where did you have $300,000 that you could lose? Caller: We had it in an inherited IRA. I was having problems with my pregnancy, so he started working from home trading because he was doing it and doing well. Dave Ramsey: Here's the problem. If we get too nitcy and nuanced and technical in order to get some benefit from this write-off, but it exposes him to the very beast that just about killed him the first time, I don't like that. So your husband being anywhere near a brokerage account sounds like suicide to me. I don't know in your household how you're going to create gains on investments to offset losses on investments to get the benefit of this that is substantial. I don't know how to do that. What I would do if I were in your shoes... but before I put your family at further risk playing with the same snakes that already bit you, I would just say, "Screw it, forget it, it's just gone."

Bret Weinstein on the Jason Arday tragedy: BRET: Can I say something terrible that I think is true, but it's just awful? He was Cambridge's mascot. He was like a pet. He was like somebody they could trot out and bring to dinners and he would do tricks for them. And the point is, your pet has certain expectations, right? They were treating him in this way because he was doing something for them. And so he was reaping the rewards from doing what he had been asked to do. And I do think that's a freaking tragedy. HEATHER: I agree, that is a tragedy. I think you're right, it does sound horrible. And I think you're right — he was effectively their mascot. He was effectively their pet. But he was also a man. He was also a human being. BRET: But my point is, the men we admire get there through a route that punishes them for doing the wrong thing, for taking the shortcut, for being cowardly, whatever it is, and rewards them when they delay gratification and they invest in something and they tough it out and all of the things that turn you into a man. And if you create the developmental environment that does the inverse of this, you will get the inverse.

Saving Myself For Marriage Was A waste. Caller (Anna): ...how can I help the bitterness and resentment that's growing in me towards my husband, I feel like he's ruining s*x for me. Basically my brother. I mean, 20 years is a long time to have a friendship, right? Dr. John Delony: Hey, call that out! That is, A: this sounds like the beginning to a Dawson's Creek episode, I'm not gonna lie, and I'm super excited about it. Two: um, yeah, that's a brother, dude. 20 years side-by-side, that's a brother, right? Caller: Yeah, definitely. So, anyway, I met my fiancé about 5 years ago. We got engaged last year. Our wedding's actually coming up in 16 days at this point. Dr. John Delony: Very cool. Congratulations, man. Caller: Thank you. Anyway, so my best friend and my fiancé, they didn't always see eye-to-eye. You know, it was, I think, a little bit of, you know, vying for my attention at some points. You know, and so anyway, over the past few years, they have really gotten close. You know, him and his wife, we BBQ together, we hang out all the time, you know, we're... it's the crew, right? And so they finally got to a point, my fiancé and him, where, you know, they were tight, everything was going well. And he actually... him and his wife's 4-year wedding anniversary just passed, and he thought it would be cool to kind of re-propose to her because they kind of eloped the first time. And he asked me to host it at my house, you know, kind of a surprise shindig, re-proposal. And I was like, "Of course, brother, like I got you. I'll have everybody over, we'll keep it a surprise, yada yada." So, that all went fine. It was nice. They stayed over afterwards to, you know, BBQ, hang out. We were having some celebratory drinks and what have you. And I ended up... me and his wife ended up, you know, going to bed. It was late, and I'm not gonna lie... Caller: I don't know what to do. My husband just died within the last week or so. Dave Ramsey: Oh, my. Caller: And I went to call my sister, only to find out that her husband had died in February. So, we're both in the same boat. But the reason I called is because I don't know exactly what I should be doing in terms of the mortgage. I received a letter from the mortgage company where they were doing the annual escrow analysis, and they've upped the mortgage payment almost $1,000. Dave Ramsey: Mmh. And how old are you? Caller: 76. Dave Ramsey: How old was your husband? Caller: 85. Dave Ramsey: What happened? Caller: He fell at home and he went to the VA hospital, and they in turn transferred him to a civilian hospital, and seven days later he died. They don't know exactly why he died; they were guessing. But... Dave Ramsey: What was his name? Caller: Monroe. Dave Ramsey: So, do you have children? Caller: He has three grown children. I have three grown children. They're all on their own. Dave Ramsey: Which one of your three children is the responsible one? Caller: My daughter. Dave Ramsey:Didn't take long to come up with that name. Call her today, okay? Call your daughter as soon as you hang up with us, and then we will have one of our coaches call you within 24 hours, and we'll make sure you got food money set up. We'll make sure that you got a good budget and you got a good handle on where you are. Somebody walking with you and helping you do this stuff. And again, we don't need any payment from this.
