🔥 NEW DATABASE JUST DROPPED 🔥 It's this thing called a "file system" apparently. Cross-platform, local first, zero dependencies. Idk if it'll scale though

Thank you for inventing 1% of obsidian

I long to have even 1% of his power

File system is no "cross platform" 🙄. In fact, file system is extremely hard to make work cross platform correctly. But would modern devs know that just vibe bro...

Hm, say more? I’d be shocked if a bucket of markdown files is hard to do on other platforms

Well it all depends on what you consider hard, but windows still sort of has a limit on file name length and you can't use certain names like com1 to com9. My guess is you don't know what encoding is so don't know if I should talk about BOM stuff but yes file system is hard

@BHolmesDev Locking files (writing/reading by another process), sorting files works differently on each platform, character encoding, etc.

@piotrista @CordasFilip Good points. I'm using @TauriApps FS API so I should be covered on locks. I'm also storing these files in my AppData folder, not on some Documents folder for user access. So I'm not designing this system for users to edit file contents at the same time

@piotrista @TauriApps Well if you are designing it to be bad ok, there are a lot of things you can get away with then. But if you want the MD files to be editable outside of your app you are going to run into edge case issues that are hard to debug and figure out.

people love inventing new useless standards

old news geezer, been using this bad boy as a db forever!!! never doubt me and my random assortment of timestamped files ever again!!!

Or just use :)

If you store the files in iCloud Drive, then you get free sync across all your devices, and sharing too.

this is why i love so much

Going live on twitch for the next hour or so to work on this. There will be snacks. And music. (may have lied about one of those) Anyways get in

How do you search

It’s coming. And it’ll be the best part

i need this in my life!!! it’s the perfect hybrid of apple notes and obsidian, with potential to be the best of both worlds!!! 😍

This guy gets it 🤝

did you just make @obsdmd killer? 🤔🔥

Love it! I'm a @BearNotesApp' fan but every few months I got hunting for a purely file-system alternative. Must-have features, IMO: a) Search b) Image support

@BearNotesApp 1) Image support is next 2) Search is gonna be awesome. From basic term match up to agentic workflows

then obsidian will be your benchmark and it'll be unclear what you need ids for

I went down the road of no ids on the end. Here’s why I needed them: 1. You get a naming collision from the generated filename. Perhaps. You tell the user they can’t do that, but I find that very unclean. Or perhaps you tack a “2” on the end, but then… 2. You set up cross-device sync. What if one device creates a name with a conflict, and the other device hasn’t synced that change yet? Now you’ve still created two files with the same name! GL building a resolver for that. The answer was just to put an ID on the end and all is well. But I should probably say… my goal is human readability, not human editably. I think Obsidian has a different goal there.

bro thinks he’s obsidian

@xing_titanium

Similar to

"new"

and filename as Id, how could not ppl love it 😌👌

So you're saying it is not web scale. Do you know @MongoDB is web scale

awesome

Spent some time this weekend creating a repo I can talk to and edit with claude code/codex much like this today. No custom interface, just using the LLM CLI and VS Code. I considered using Hugo for a prettier presentation, but in the end decided I didn't enough to go through the trouble. Github does good enough markdown styling - I can just commit to a repo there and view. Anyway, this is a cool project and my point is that it looks like it would play nicely with LLM CLI apps. Keep going!

I miss when everything import was stored in the Resource Fork.

File system cross platform? You must have not delved much into assembly just yet. Cross platform but it’s different in Linux, windows and needs emscripten in wasm. It’s as cross platform as my grandma on her wheelchair.

This is TextEdit for people who... don't know how to create a folder? And press C-s to save? What am I missing? Are people this incapacitated nowadays?

As DBA I hear alarm sound every time I see the words "database" and "dropped" in a single sentence.

This is what happens when gen Z grows up and has never used Microsoft Word in their life

SQLite better 🔥

If you want something built better, production ready and smarter: Yeah, you can use it on Cursor and install it with 1 line of prompt. It is open source and i'm looking for the founding team!

Add a hidden file for indexes and you got yourself a db

💀

Don't get it

Instructions unclear my file system is a sql database

You're basically creating mark-text
