Happy Friday! ❤️ Some Fridays I like to go up to my retro room to curl up and unwind with a favorite old tapes after a busy work week. That’s my plan for tonight! I keep my original Blockbuster card near my tapes, which makes me smile as I pick what to watch. Blockbuster was founded in 1985 and was quite successful until the mid-late 2000s. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2010, and all but one store was closed by 2019. Growing up, I had a tradition of renting movies most Fridays. If at my Mom’s, we’d each pick one, and I’d usually pick something with ninjas (I rented 3 Ninjas too many times), a Jim Carrey movie, Ferngully, or Terminator 2. She usually picked something with Steven Seagal or Tom Selleck 😆 It was the one time of week she’d get soda and pizza and it was lovely. My mom initially rented from our grocery store. It’s wild to think how many grocery stores used to have a video and game rental section! I remember ours had a giant Beastmaster poster 🤭 Eventually those gave way to Blockbuster, and my parents each got memberships. It was great to rent so many at a time—I think we eventually got unlimited rentals for $20 per month. With that, I felt free to explore lesser known titles rather than the release of the latest blockbuster film, or re-rent Terminator II (that movie was huge when I was in elementary school, even though my friends and I probably shouldn’t have watched it!). I’d have slumber parties for my birthday, pick 4 movies, and we’d be up all night laughing at them. It was wonderful. I miss video stores, but am happy I can still watch the tapes in my collection whenever I wish, under a blanket, cozy lights, and with snacks. I also love the Blockbuster exhibit the @RetroGamingExpo displays with @loneblockbuster and it’s amazing to have that feel of walking through the aisles again!
