Around 1.7 million BTC sits in old Pay-to-Public-Key scripts, with public keys permanently exposed on the blockchain. This includes coins widely believed to belong to Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. No quantum computer powerful enough to exploit this exists today. But the paper warns that when one does, these dormant assets require no transaction to be broadcast — a future attacker could simply derive the private key silently from public data. The research team revealed that a superconducting quantum computer could derive a Bitcoin private key in approximately 9 minutes — just inside Bitcoin's average 10-minute block time.
