art direction falls somewhere between the yale rare book library and the wellington family. relatively simple on the outside with more surprising details the longer you explore. each detail serves a specific purpose

so that the .dev team wouldn't have to rely on design to art direct visuals for each post, we explored early computer art, considered dithering, ascii, image degradation, and more complex creative code techniques

we landed on a clean line approach and built out an initial set of families attempting to generate artwork based purely on the content within each article. those lacked a human touch so we built an instrument to explore the possibility space

the same simple math powers the artwork, cycles the colors, and was pulled from our core brand waves across stripe dot com and stripe sessions

devs might return to this website often so we felt customization would be appreciated. we built out a functional console to drive the interaction. there are more secrets in there but you'll have to discover them yourself

much like this thread, the footer is also endless

if you made it this far, ty. i have no newsletter and never will massive ty to @nainoashizuru , @narrowd , @bits_by_brandon , clonk, @Jess_Pettet, abe, firestone, @ow, zack, and the rest of the @stripe teams that supported us in the design and build of this website 🫡

almost forgot, there’s also a blog with good articles that will be added weekly. read them if you dare

Devin, I needed inspiration today and this thread was at the top of my feed so thank you... so fucking much... for getting me all riled up.

happy to help 🫡💚
