“Partnership” with Anthropic? Ten different government departments (silos) already using AI independently? California’s government organization is bloated, inefficient, unaccountable, costly, and full of redundancies. Why use AI separately within isolated, redundant organizational silos? AI should be used in a single pass across the whole of California government to weed out overlap, streamline workflows, eliminate redundant services, reduce cost, improve accountability, and improve service quality.

Anthropic is running on openai's 80% margin structure. newsom didn't sign a partnership, he signed an insurance policy for california state government revenue. smart play.

A 50% discount is not a good deal if every department must pay separately. Newsom has shown no hesitation in wielding state authority on many other issues, yet somehow negotiated what could become an economic disaster: a windfall contract for Anthropic funded by taxpayers. A fiscally responsible agreement would have secured a much lower statewide price through a single collective contract, giving every agency and department access to the AI platform for one heavily negotiated fee. Instead, this structure could generate massive profits for Anthropic while forcing California taxpayers to overpay at a time when the state is already cash-strapped. There is also no guarantee that prices will not rise once state agencies become dependent on the software.
