Next Monday (15 May) will mark 75 years since the Nakba, when over 500 Palestinian communities were forcibly depopulated during the creation of the Israeli state. To mark the occasion, we have re-launched #PalOpenMaps with a bunch of new features 1/6

Palestine Open Maps #PalOpenMaps allows users to search, navigate and download over 330 highly detailed maps of #Palestine before the Nakba, and also to compare past and present geographies 2/6

The new version of #PalOpenMaps has added: - Arabic language - 1940s aerial photography layer - Crowd sourced historical map overlay - Links to local information on other sites - 3D view 3/6

The new #PalOpenMaps also allows you to share an individual town or city, like this (just share the URL from your browser): 4/6

#PalOpenMaps was initiated in 2018 by @visualizingpal, and continues to be maintained by @majdal and myself in our spare time. Personally speaking, it was the project that first got me into web mapping (which is now also my day job!) 5/6

Finally, #PalOpenMaps is a fully open source project. The front-end code, which I have spent the past year rebuilding from scratch, is built using Svelte Kit and Maplibre, can be found on Github 6/6

PS... I've just added a new "how to" thread on all the latest V2 features Palestine Open Maps #PalOpenMaps, just in case you might have missed them. #Nakba #NakbaDay #Nakba75

It's an amazing and highly important project. Thanks to it I found out that the olive grove next to where I grew up belongs to the destroyed village of Dir Tarif. I use it several times a day to learn more about what was here before, something that my regime ignores. Thank you!!

So happy to hear this Tom! FYI, a little feature we've just added is the "find my location" button (below the zoom buttons at the top of the map), which should zoom to your location if you're in Palestine/Israel

This resource is new to me, even after 50+ years of support for Palestinians! Thank you. 🇮🇪❤️🇵🇸💔

May 15 marks 75 years since Arabs chose war instead of the first ever sovereign Arab State in the former kingdom of Israel. For the following 19 years they chose NOT to create a sovereign state in Judea and Samaria (West Bank). These choices are the catastrophe for their people.
