Dear people outside the USA, This is what America is really like. You've been lied to how wonderful it is here but it's not. It's horrible. We're a "Wizard of Oz" country where reality is behind the curtain. We criminalize the poorest people, literally. Many don't have healthcare. And many like this gentleman have to sleep on the streets. This happened in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The crime? Being unhoused & eating in a McDonald's that a customer bought & paid for. We criminalize people doing good acts. We're an incredibly cruel country & a cruel society which I'm sure will be shown in some of the replies below from people pinching down on poor people. (I'd be shocked if that didn't happen. Don't come here please. Send help....

I've seen this up close. As a physician assistant, I treated unhoused patients in the ER, watched them get stabilized, then discharged right back to the streets with nowhere to go. That never left me. St. Vincent is what I've wanted to see happen for a long time: a place where people can get treatment, support, and build real, independent lives in permanent housing.

This is what poverty for residents and homelessness really looks like in LA. Behind the statistics are people: parents, seniors, and hardworking individuals. Did you know that 1 in 4 homeless adults in LA has a job? Or that over 4% are veterans? Our outreach teams are on the front lines, connecting our unhoused neighbors with the shelter, services, and support they need to find a pathway home. This work is complex, but necessary.
