"A modelless company is sitting on shifting sand." Yash Patil (Yash Patil) is the founder and CEO of Applied Compute, a company that trains custom models on company data and serves them in production. His conviction: every organization has its own definition of what good looks like, and a company that doesn't own its model is one system card away from finding out what it can no longer do. (0:00) Introduction (3:50) Betting on custom AI models (12:30) Yash's early influences and first projects (19:29) Inside OpenAI during Sam Altman's firing (28:18) What Yash admires about Sam Altman (29:43) Teaching models to reason (35:39) The core insight behind Applied Compute (45:55) Why model training never ends (51:25) The culture and people of Applied Compute (1:03:48) Final meditations Thank you to the partners who make this possible Brex: The intelligent finance platform. Today, Yash Patil (Yash Patil) is the founder of Applied Compute, a $1.3 billion AI company. Before this, he was a Stanford sophomore who dropped out to join OpenAI. It all began when he emailed Sam Altman asking for a job. Altman introduced him to the residency team. They told him he had to drop out. Yash wasn't sure he could bring his parents around. So he asked Altman directly. Altman said, "Let me chat with them.” A week later, Yash joined OpenAI.

Dee to Angela: Devens said that those four worry him (FAP). These four socially are not great, but then Taylor/Lala/Yash are socially more, & reeling in Kamu, so that's four. With our five, we still have by association Mallory & Melody. We just have to keep Drew & Barrett happy for now. If we can maybe hit like a Yash/Taylor/Lala, preferably Taylor...you get Lala in more, I can get Yash more. Or Devens probably, cause he's a dude. #bb28

Yash: "I try to not let other people's decisions affect my wellbeing." Taylor: "It's only 9 people in this house." Yash: "But there's only one person you can control, and that's yourself." Taylor: "See this is making me not want to talk to you again. I didn't ask for Book of Yash, I asked for Yash." Yash: "That is my genuine belief. That's how I operate...I am how I am." Taylor: "Ok Yash, and so am I." Yash: "Exactly." Taylor: "...You're too quick with the comebacks." #BB28 #BBBitez

Enterprise AI deployments today are frozen in time. Model capabilities stagnate in production. The problem compounds because companies aren’t static either. Every time your company improves, the model falls further behind. The bottleneck is continual learning. How does a model do something once and improve from feedback? The future of enterprise AI is Specific Intelligence: custom models teams own, trained on a company’s choices, interaction by interaction, using internal knowledge general models cannot access. Applied Compute helps companies train, serve, own, and improve custom models. Thanks Apoorv Agrawal for having Yash Patil at MS&E 435 to talk about the future of model training.

When is harness optimization enough? When does post-training make sense? What will determine who becomes the new AI hyperscaler? Yash Patil, co-founder of Applied Compute, was the perfect person to discuss this and more. Yash worked on Codex at OpenAI before leaving to co-found Applied Compute with fellow OpenAI researchers Rhythm Garg and Linden Li. Sixteen months in, the company is a unicorn, and is serving enterprises including DoorDash and Cognition. ⚡Why Edge Compute Matters for the Future of Agentic AI AI isn’t just about smarter models, it’s about where they run. Centralized clouds are costly, slow, and controlled by a few. That’s not the future. 👉Join the OptimAI Network: With OptimAI Edge Compute and the upcoming Core Node release, every device becomes part of a decentralized supercomputer: + AI models run directly on your devices (phones, desktops, IoT devices) + Data stays local, secure, and real-time + Compute scales with the community, not corporations This is how we power the next generation of Agentic AI - AI systems that don’t just think, but act like you. Lightweight, fast, everywhere, for everyone. Stay tuned. The Edge is coming.

Your data is your edge, but only if your AI is built on it. Rent a generic model and so can your competitor. The companies with an edge are deploying custom models that they own and improve over time. Our co-founder Rhythm Garg recently stopped by to share how companies are owning their intelligence with Applied Compute.
