The California Legislature thinks you are safer when convicted child molesters who were sentenced to hundreds of years behind bars are let out of prison early. Not because they have been rehabilitated. But because they turned 50 years old. Under California’s elder parole law, even convicted sex offenders are eligible to be released from prison after serving 20 years of their sentence and they have turned 50 years old. AB 47, a bi-partisan bill authored by Stephanie Nguyen(D-Sacramento) and co-authored by Juan Alanis (R-Modesto), fought to keep convicted sex offenders out of our communities and behind the bars. AB 47 would have required sex offenders to have served at least 25 continuous years in prison and be at least 65 years old before being eligible for elderly parole. But the California Legislature killed the bill on Friday. And as a result sex offenders across California will be eligible for release – after just 20 years and they are 50 years old. That means Matthew Zakrzewski, a male nanny from Costa Mesa who was sentenced to 707 years to life for molesting 16 boys as young as 2 years old and providing child pornography to a 17th boy, will be eligible for parole after just 20 years in custody when he turns 50. That’s in 14 years. During the Assembly Public Safety Committee hearing on AB 47, Assemblymember Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale) said he couldn’t understand why the was even debating letting “the worst of the worst” out early when a judge had heard all of the evidence and sentenced a defendant based on the evidence. He further alleges that new hotels and construction projects backed by KDP-affiliated businesspeople are part of a deliberate effort to demographically alter the district’s Christian character. He also criticizes the appointment of token Christian officials by the KDP, noting that these individuals are not even from the area. He goes on to accuse the KDP of reshaping Erbil’s broader identity by flooding the city with prostitution and elements he describes as alien to its cultural fabric. He notes that simply searching for the phrase “Mara’az Erbil” - a colloquial Iraqi Arabic term for “exhibition,” often used as a coded reference to prostitution and escorts - reveals how Erbil has become a well-known destination for such activities among Iraqi Arabs, despite the fact that almost none of the sex workers are not from the city. When I was a child, if I’d asked my mum why Regan here said he was a woman when he was clearly a man, she’d probably have said he was confused or unwell. But she’d also have told me to be kind - and not to snigger about him with my friends. What she would not have done - under any circumstances - is tell me he was a woman. Because she understood something that now seems to have been forgotten: good safeguarding starts with giving children clear boundaries and an accurate understanding of the world around them. Telling a child that a physically male adult with a deep voice is literally a woman isn’t kindness. It’s confusing. And confusion does not help children develop healthy boundaries. I also wonder whether Southern has considered the position of colleagues who hold different, but equally lawful beliefs about sex and gender. Should a public-facing employer be publicly endorsing one side of such a contested debate on its public Instagram account? Respecting people is one thing. But ‘kindness’ should never require us to deny reality or abandon common sense.
