Nick Caserio on Keylan Rutledge: “The makeup on this guy is elite. There’s one player in the draft that our scouts graded the way that they did and it was him. We didn’t talk to him at the combine because we didn’t need to. Big Red, who he is is emblematic in what you saw tonight, basically the guy was in an air b&b w/ him & his wife, you see some of the other draft parties, it’s like a circus. This guy’s all ball. He’s all football. Doesn’t really care about anything else. Wants to punch people in the mouth, yep that works here.”

Paul Pierce says the way the rookie players are playing in the summer league, it shows you the excitement that we put towards this draft: “It’s the build up coming in we was like this is going to be one of the best drafts. And then for these players to come out there and kind of solidify that kind of in summer league because you like, all right, let’s see you know what they really got. And so I love seeing that because it’s nothing better than seeing these guys because this is the time to be optimistic right here.” (Via No Fouls Given)

That’s why the Miami situation is interesting because Miami has the 13th pick in the draft and it’s one of the best things they can offer. If you want to have a choice of who you get at 13th pick you do it before. If you’re not getting a pick on this draft then that’s just a fake deadline to get teams to get their best offers”

"Being able to continue to stockpile those draft picks, it's always something that myself and our front office—it's been a goal of ours. We'll continue to add 'em, and when we have moments like this—when we see a player that we think is worth it or for the price—we'll continue to try to use those picks to go get them." 🎙️ On knowing when to make a big move: "We'll know when the time is right." "A lot of nuances go into it—which players are available, contract lengths, different dynamics that go into all of that. I promise you we will know when the time is right. This recent stretch has been beautiful to watch. All the credit goes to the players, Charles Lee, and his coaching staff... it's been really fun to see. All of this has just continued to add to the sample size that we need. In the summer, we'll figure out exactly what this team is and what else we need to do to continue to take the next step."

Anne Lamott coined “shitty first drafts” in her book, Bird by Bird, where you “let it romp all over the place, knowing that no one is going to see it and that you can shape it later.” So, how do you shape it? You take it through three drafts: 1) The child's draft / shitty first draft: be firm but friendly. "I like this. I like your description, but we're going to maybe use it somewhere else." 2) The adult draft: you take out, you fix, you find the stronger verbs. 3) The dental draft: "You go twos by twos. You wiggle and jiggly floss. Some teeth might need a little attention. Some teeth are fine. You go on to the next one, and that's really what good writing is." Great writing rarely emerges on the first pass. It’s an iterative process where you get it all on the page, remove and strengthen, and then tweak the details to end up with a great piece. ANNE LAMOTT

That's exactly what they did with Dillon Gabriel, who was their second-ranked QB in the draft behind Cam Ward. "The pick came in, and everyone said, 'They panicked.' Then you watch that draft call and realize they didn't panic--that was their guy. They identified their guy, they went and got their guy."
