Nigel Farage says he will resign as MP amid a scandal over gifts and benefits he received before being elected in 2024, but insists he will run in the ensuing by-election for Clacton-on-Sea. In a statement based around his "future in public life" the Reform UK leader detailed a list of grievances around media and political scrutiny of the donations scandal. Parliament is investigating whether Farage should have declared a £5 million gift given by cryptocurrency billionaire, Christopher Harborne, and the investigation could be expanded after the Sunday Times revealed benefits from his advisor, George Cottrell, who was previously jailed for fraud in the US in 2017. Mr Farage insists he has done nothing wrong, calling these personal gifts.

We read twice for you that Farage’s spokesperson has said that Mr Nigel Farage had already told the relevant people in Parliament about both his donation from Harbourne and also his donation from Cottrell, and those people responsible in parliament for investigating parliamentary standards advised Farage he did not have to register those relationships in the parliamentary standards register. and that’s according to the Telegraph today, that Farage was advised ‘that they did not need to be reported’. Now that particular piece of information is highly highly relevant, because it’s a very specific rebuttal by Nigel. He is stating that he had already told the relevant people in parliament of these two donations and that they’d advised him that he did not need to report them. If that’s a lie, it’s very easy to catch Nigel Farage out in that lie because of course there will be those people in parliament will be able to say ‘we weren’t told, there’s no record of Nigel Farage telling us.’ But Farage claiming that he had indeed told them is a very specific thing to be lying about, because it’s very easy to disprove. Sky’s Beth Rigby points out rules state new MPs "must register all their current financial interests, and any registrable benefits (other than earnings) received in the 12 months before their election within one month of their election". The rules also say "both the possible motive of the giver and the use to which the gift is to be put should be considered", adding "if there is any doubt, the benefit should be registered".
