We already use technology in our elections. BVAS is a technological device. It captures biometrics and uploads data. So if Nigeria is truly “not technologically ready,” then why introduce BVAS in the first place? You can’t accept technology for accreditation and suddenly reject it when it’s time to transmit results. Also, manual voting does not stop electronic transmission. People can vote with paper, and results can still be sent electronically. Many countries do this successfully. The real issue is not how voters mark ballots, but how results are handled after voting ends. The power supply argument doesn’t add up either. BVAS runs on batteries, not NEPA. Banks, POS agents, mobile transfers, and telecom services work daily across Nigeria—even in villages. If we can send money, verify identities, and run businesses digitally, then uploading election results is clearly not impossible. Let’s also be honest: INEC has done electronic uploads before in past elections, and it worked. So saying Nigeria is “not ready” ignores reality. What many Nigerians are worried about is this: delays in result transmission create room for manipulation. Transparency closes that door. And that’s exactly why some people are uncomfortable with real-time electronic transmission. If the concern was genuinely about technology or power, the focus would be on improving the system, not discouraging it.
