OPEN LETTER TO THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE Dear Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Police Force_CRU, I am posting this video because the man in it is an officer of the Nigerian Police Force, and his remarks about Igbos and Peter Obi are deeply troubling. As an Igbo man, how am I expected to trust the Nigerian Police when one of its officers publicly profiles Igbos as ritualists and Yahoo boys? The Nigerian Police Force is a federal institution established to protect every Nigerian, regardless of tribe, ethnicity or political affiliation. An officer who publicly makes such disparaging and discriminatory remarks about a section of Nigerians has demonstrated conduct that is completely incompatible with the responsibility and dignity of the office he occupies. There is video evidence of his conduct. I am therefore calling on Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Police Force_CRU to immediately identify this officer and dismiss him from the Nigerian Police Force with immediate effect. Anything less sends a dangerous message. If an officer can publicly make these statements about Igbos, remain in the Nigerian Police Force and face no serious disciplinary consequence, then the Nigerian public is entitled to question whether the position he expressed is tolerated by, or reflects the position of, the institution he represents. The Police Force must not allow silence or inaction to create that impression. This is about public trust. This is about the dignity of Nigerians. This is about whether an Igbo Nigerian can look at an officer of the Nigerian Police Force and believe that he will be treated fairly and without ethnic prejudice. The Office of the Director General Security Matters is not unaware of the current tension in parts of the State following the unfortunate incident involving the death of Mr Oghenemine Ogidi in Effurun. We acknowledge the pain and concerns of citizens, and investigations into the matter are in full swing to ensure justice is served. 2.However, it has become necessary to address a disturbing trend arising from this incident. During a recent routine patrol by officers of Operation Delta Sweep, an individual accosted by them became unruly, questioned the lawful stop, and physically assaulted an officer by grabbing and dragging the officer's uniform. Contrary to what was being circulated, the officer involved is a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on official duty, not a Police Officer. 3.The State Government and all security agencies strongly condemn this act. While we understand public anger over the Oghenemine Ogidi’s incident, it must be emphasised that no citizen is permitted to take the law into their own hands, insult, or assault officers discharging their lawful duties. 4. In view of the above, we therefore warn the general public as follows: i. Desist from any form of assault, obstruction, or disrespect toward law enforcement officers. Such actions are criminal and will be met with the full weight of the law. not resort to self-help or mob action. IMPERSONATION OF A SAPS OFFICER UNDER INVESTIGATION An individual has been captured on video dancing with alcohol in hand while wearing official SAPS insignia, raising serious concerns about impersonation of a police officer, and misuse of state symbols. The incident allegedly took place over the weekend at a Pub in Mpumalanga. This conduct is a direct violation of SAPS regulations and may constitute a criminal offense. According to SAPS Dress Code Regulations and National Instruction 4 of 2014 (Wearing of Uniform and Insignia): "No person who is not a member of the Service may wear or use the official uniform, insignia or equipment of the SAPS in a manner that could reasonably be construed as impersonating a police" Section 68 of the SAPS Act prohibit impersonation of a police official, which can lead to criminal prosecution.
