@RoyalMarines @AustralianArmy @MRFDarwin Royal Marine reconnaissance patrol which one night came across an Argentine forward position. Not wanting to trek around and waste time and (being on reconnaissance) not wanting to fight, they sneaked past the sentries (that’s RM fieldcraft for you!)

@RoyalMarines @AustralianArmy @MRFDarwin and cut straight through past the sleeping soldiers. Disgusted at the state of the encampment, the sergeant i/c of the patrol tore a leaf out of his notebook and wrote in Spanish: Call yourselves soldiers? This place is a shithole. Get it sorted at once.

@RoyalMarines @AustralianArmy @MRFDarwin He signed it (name, rank and unit) and pinned it to the sleeping-bag of the Argentine major. The patrol then continued unobserved past the rest of the sentries and continued their work.

@RoyalMarines @AustralianArmy @MRFDarwin One of the favourite tricks of Ghurkhas and SAS during training exercises with inexperienced troops was to tie the shoelaces of the sentries together and then alert the camp, so the sentry would go to run to react to the alarm only to fall over their own feet.
