To be fair, too many Americans aren't educated enough in math to recognize errors like this, which is why I think politicians often use percent changes to either hide or exaggerate numerical data.

It all comes down to wording... You could say "it used to be 600% more expensive" and be fully correct. Most people think that statement is equivalent to "now it's 600% cheaper". If most people think it's equivalent, can we, mathematicians, say it's not? It's not a math question.
