No need to be a tree expert to see why this newly planted tree isn't going to make it!

do we really need so many tree-plastic guards? i see lots of trees in areas where there is little wildlife. Roadsides for example surely don't need all this plastic. I live in Cambridgeshire, and no one picks them up even when the trees have grown. Easy to recycle. More plastic

Excellent observation, tubes have their place, but are they really needed for whips, where spiral guards would do just as well, and there are biodegradable alternative, but they cost more, so its all about cost again, which is about specification and oversight.

If you pay people to plant trees rather than grow them this happens. It should be the result that counts.

I agree, it defies belief that a landscape contractor somewhere thought this was an acceptable tree to plant. Let's hope the LPA see it and enforce replacement.

What's the ultimate effect of having the whips planted so densely? It seems to me it's potentially misleading for Biodiversity Net Gain if you count 100 trees planted but you know ultimately 5 will have to shade out the rest?

Multiple issues there - if this is part of a development project, then the Local Authority planners should be able tk take a substantial bond or similar to cover cost of maintenance/replacement. Landscape architects also need much much better training.

Sadly becoming a more regular sight in the rush to be green & plant trees at all costs. Quite often we see the least productive & wildlife rich areas planted similar to this 😕

Councils and developers don’t care what happens to the trees once they’re planted. The surround them in plastic, neglect to water them and it’s job done as far as they’re concerned. So terribly depressing.

On the other hand non experts like me are stating at this without a clue so maybe you could actually just say what you’re trying to say?…

There is no simple answer to that good question in the limited Twitter space. Plant trees that are going to survive, not trees that meet a height specification, but have no realistic hope of reaching maturity. In short, do the job properly.

Tree planting is purely performative.
