I once tried to impress upon my boomer father how amazing these places were and that there was no way the dynastic Egyptians could have built these places with the tools archaeologists have recovered within the historical record. I explained their alignment to true north, the precision of the stone statues, boxes, and masonry. I showed him a detailed diagram of the weaving passageways beneath Saqqara. I even explained that all of this was done in places where no natural light exist, so how did the workers see what they were doing? I have personally researched every known ancient site in Egypt pouring through thousands of pages of detailed descriptions of the structures and what was found within them. My father chuckled and said “Ancient people had too much time on their hands. If you give a bunch of bored men 30-40 years they could build anything”. I thought that was a humorous response. Some people just do not care for the mysteries of ancient Egypt. People will always choose a simple explanation for that which they do not understand. The construction of these places does not easily be reconciled with the state they are currently in. I believe they were looted by ancient Egyptians and taken unjustly by them. The first dynasties inherited these places. Even those early Egyptians did not know what they were used for. And because they didn’t understand they turned them into funerary monuments and tributes to ages gone.

The really crazy part is these granary storages were written about in the bible when Joseph built them after reading Pharaoh's dreams of 7-yrs of famine to follow 7-yrs of boom harvests.

Somehow Egyptians had enough time, people and support resources to do all this while constructing huge pyramids without heavy machinery. A small building close to me started over two years ago and it's not totally done yet.

The real question to ask . . . Why square? A cylindrical hole has a lower surface area to volume ratio making it not only more stable but more efficient to create. To go to the extra effort to create sharp square corners begs the question . . . why? @Grok
