Everyone’s the hero in their own story—hardly anyone wakes up choosing to be the villain.

Great Post! I was about halfway in and I KNEW the answer! He did and does not see himself as evil. This may be insightful for Bible lovers. Is it possible that Satan does not think he is evil?

Interesting take. The idea that even the ultimate adversary might not see himself as the villain lines up with a lot of how people (and characters) justify their own actions. Makes the “no one thinks they’re evil” point hit harder when you apply it to Scripture.

it’s cognitive dissonance and binary moralism that we see battling for the minds of mankind today. Cognitive dissonance is believing your own lies and binary. Moralism is the good bad right and wrong us versus them type of thinking it’s pervasive… Nobody ever thinks they’re the bad guy, but the world is full of bad guys. Trust>fear 1John4:18

No one thinks they’re the villain. That’s why Waltz’s performance hits so hard.

That is not what happened. That is a famous interview and I suggest you rewatch it.

Jordan Peterson points this out- in a lecture he would ask how many students would have been on the side of the nazis and of course they all said no- so he explains how they only have hindsight. Then we saw people turning in their neighbors for having an outdoor get-together.

Waltz nailed it: the scariest villains never see themselves as evil.

True. The most dangerous people are usually the ones who genuinely believe they’re the good guys.

Christoph Waltz’s reaction says everything. True evil is rarely self-aware.

This idea, “no one thinks they’re evil”, is what sparks the majority of my self-reflection… and I’m still not sure. 🤔
