"No one would board a plane flown by a pilot with 20% training so why push unqualified MAPs onto NHS patients?" Samuel Parker from BMA North East Regional Council speaks to #ARM2024 about the BMA's scope of practice for MAPs and the need to put patient safety first.

True. PAs don't even have 20%. 2.0% maybe

The debate is actually quite simple: - Is there a difference between standard medical training for a doctor and PA courses? - If not, then why are they accepted rota replacements for doctor roles/confusing titles/no uniform etc. - If equivalent, then what is a medical degree

...Took long enough for you the BMA to kick off...ordinary folk have been flagging this for over a year...actually qualified medics for much longer...where have you been...in a dark bin???

The 20 percent is an over estimation of training. It would be more like if a pilot trained in a cessna single prop plane why would you let him fly an airbus a380 with 400 lives on board?

Question - how do pilots get 100% of training if they don’t fly any planes. Cheers.

Oh sorry, second question, where is 20% from? Is MAPs PAs? because if so, undergrad is 4 years for PAs, and undergrad medicine 5 years. Which isn’t 20%. If post grad, PA MSc is 2 years, GEM 4 years, which still isn’t 20%. Even 2 years vs 5 years isn’t 20%.

@salerio @TheBMA Untrue. Clinical placements don't start for 2.5 years into medical school, after many clinical skills sessions, then lasting 2.5 years (then exams) then onto foundation doctor work. Much much quicker for PA students to be in placements with much less training. & similar when PA.
