Zayd ibn Harithah was the adopted son of Muhammad. Per Islamic sources (Bukhari, Muslim, sira), Muhammad freed him and publicly declared him his son with inheritance rights. He was called Zayd ibn Muhammad for years until Quran 33:4-5 ordered calling adopted sons by their biological fathers' names. Quran 33:37 itself references him and the wives of adopted sons in the Zaynab marriage context. He was never biological, but adoption was real until abolished.

Zayd didn’t divorce Zaynab out of nowhere. Muhammad already wanted her. Zayd knew it, Muhammed hid it at first because he knew people would condemn it, but Zayd couldn’t take it anymore, so he divorced her so Muhammad could marry her. Muhammad was still afraid of the public backlash. Then a “revelation” conveniently arrived: adoption is abolished (that’s why there is no real adoption in Islam today), and Allah Himself married the woman to Muhammad so nobody could accuse him. Smart, sharp guy. The rule changed exactly when he needed it.😅
