Mets were winning that game and eventually won. Pete is not close to the impact Piazza had with the Mets.

So that means Mets fans can’t care about him??

Alonso isn't near the same caliber as Piazza as a player or human being. He cared more about the homerun derby than winning.

You really believe he only cared about the home run derby??? Okey-dokey, Smokey

Not only. He busted his ass which you gotta appreciate as a fan. But him taking a curtain call and snarky comments about the FO show his true ego-centric character.

Yes, indeed. We did it for: Seaver Strawberry and Piazza But most of this fanbase is too young to know that. #LGM

A few things that are different here. 1. Mets were winning that game. 2. Mets were a good team that year. 3. Mike's a Hall of Fame player.

I would say he didn’t tie the game in the 9th 😂 I doubt many would be bothered if was 4-0 in the 4th to make it 4-1. I’ve been happy to see many Mets do well in their return but never rooted against the Mets.

Mets were running away with the division, there was no drama about him leaving.

Happening early in a game the Mets won with a 14 game lead in the east in early August prob helped

I will say when Mike almost hit a 3rd to either tie or take the lead, the mood in the stadium was more mixed

I was at this game. I applauded his 1st at bat. I didn't applaud this HR. Didn't feel any urge to. He was an opposing player.

Yup I've been saying this. It was a classy move by Met fans. Who wouldn't want to place for this team knowing how beloved you can be

They were coasting to a division championship, winning cures all. It also was obvious that a divorce was coming the previous year & all sides were prepared for it & fairly amicable. And Mike’s replacement, Paul LoDuca, had a good year in 2006. Everything opposite from this year.

Aside from obvious differences between caliber of player, point of the career they were in, context of the game, the Mets were also calewalking to the NL East division win so everyone was in a much better mood.

I would never tell a fan what to do. Ever. Two diff circumstances. 4-2 game, 6th inning Mets were running away with div. Piazza greatest met of all time behind Seaver. Not comparable. Personally, after his first at bat, it’s now the Mets vs balt and Pete isn’t a Met.

I also didn't have to listen to people whine and moan about Piazza incessantly the entire year. This was also not a game tying homer in the 9th.

Context matters we was up 4-0 then 4-1

Sure, that is a component to the situation. But cheering for an opposing player when they hit a home run is still cheering for an opposing player when they hit a home run.

As a Meta fan seeing Mets "fans" show up hoping for Orioles 1st baseman 300th HR and not Mets SS Francisco Lindor's it's kinda embarrassing.

4th inning of a game they’re winning 4-0 while being 13 games up on the division lead. Ya it’s exactly the same as a game tying homer in the 9th you’re right 😂

That right man, I don’t fucking get those people last couple days upset about cheering for Pete, F those people, Pete beloved , Stearns & Cohen kicked him out, they offered Soto a deal he couldn’t refused but nickel & dime towards Pete! Let’s go Pete!!!

Alonso is home grown, Piazza played his first 8 seasons elsewhere. Alonso played more games as a Met. Alonso owns the record for home runs as a Met. They both led the Mets to the playoffs twice. You can't even compare. Pete was ours and ours only. Difference is soft fans today

I was at that game. An inning after piazza got the curtain call, the entire crowd started chanting Paul LoDuca’s name. Also, Piazza didn’t turn down an extension to leave

Were fans openly cheering against the Mets when this happened? (I was there so I know they weren’t). Also Piazza did more for the Mets than Alonso ever did
