Here's a simplified explanation of how the Northern Lights form: 1. The Sun emits a stream of charged particles, known as the solar wind. 2. These particles travel through space and are drawn towards the Earth's magnetic poles due to the Earth's magnetic field. 3. When the charged particles reach the Earth's atmosphere, they collide with gas particles, such as oxygen and nitrogen. 4. These collisions cause the gas particles to become excited and release energy in the form of light. This process is called "excitation." 5. The color of the Northern Lights depends on the type of gas particles involved in the collisions. Oxygen produces green and red colors, while nitrogen produces blue and purple colors. The Northern Lights are most visible in the winter months when the nights are longer and the skies are darker.

@gunsnrosesgirl3 Someday, when they're over the entire planet, say goodbye to the communications and power grids via the ground wire.

@gunsnrosesgirl3 It's nice to see an "actual time" video, you normal only get time lapse recordings (to emphasise the changes and movement I suppose).

Beautiful picture 👍🏻 The northern lights are also known as the aurora borealis and they are created by the interaction of the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field. The solar wind is a stream of charged particles that escape from the sun and travel through space. The Earth’s magnetic field deflects most of these particles, but some of them enter the atmosphere near the poles. There, they collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms and molecules, and make them glow in different colors. The northern lights are usually green, but they can also be red, blue, purple, or pink, depending on the type and altitude of the gas.
