Fruit juice carries a higher deuterium concentration than ocean water. Most people drinking it for their health are loading their mitochondria with more deuterium than ocean water delivers. Fruit juices measure between 140 and 170 ppm deuterium. Ocean water sits at 156 ppm. Many fruit juices land above it. The measurement data comes from István Fórizs — Hungarian geochemist and isotope hydrologist who studies the movement and distribution of isotopes through water systems in nature. The mechanism is straightforward. Plants transpire water through their leaves. During transpiration, lighter water evaporates preferentially and the water remaining in the plant becomes deuterium-enriched. When that fruit is pressed into juice, the enriched water it retained comes with it. This is why whole plants tell a different story. Hungarian plants measure at approximately 140 ppm — below the water they grow in, which ranges between 132 and 152 ppm depending on the season. Plants fractionate isotopes during metabolic processes, preferentially incorporating lighter hydrogen into their organic compounds. Whole plant foods arrive at your body modestly deuterium-depleted relative to their water source. Fruit juice reverses this entirely. Juicing concentrates the deuterium-enriched water the plant retained while stripping away the fiber and cellular structure that came with the depletion. You get the heavy fraction without the benefit. The gap between eating a whole apple and drinking apple juice is not just about fiber and sugar. It is an isotopic gap your mitochondria experience directly.

His answer reframes everything about longevity, diet, and deuterium depletion. They're not avoiding deuterium through diet. They're depleting it through biology. Five synchronized mechanisms — all of which modern humans have largely destroyed. 1. Nutritional metabolic ketosis (via the microbiome) These populations eat carbohydrates. But their highly adapted microbiome ferments those carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids — butyrate, propionate — that are deuterium-depleted relative to the original substrate. Their gut bacteria eat the high-deuterium carbohydrates and hand the human host low-deuterium ketone bodies. They are operating in a state of nutritional ketosis — without eating a ketogenic diet. The bacteria do the depletion for them. 2. The biological cost — stool volume and skin shedding. The deuterium has to exit somewhere. Boros: "You need to look at their stool. Which brings us to the next point. 3. Sunlight Most of these super centenarian populations live close to the equator. Intense red and near-infrared photon pressure penetrates tissue and reduces the viscosity of structured water inside the mitochondrial matrix — allowing nanomotors to keep spinning efficiently even when dietary deuterium is slightly elevated. The light and the local food work as a synchronized package. Boros: "If you look at some papers that discuss the deuterium content in carbohydrates — for example, the fifth and the third carbon of sugar in beans which are grown in a natural environment — they are actually pretty depleted of deuterium simply because they use the night cycle when they use their chloroplasts as mitochondria." Modern industrially farmed GMO crops have been engineered to grow faster — destroying this natural night-cycle deuterium depletion mechanism entirely. The carbohydrate looks the same. The deuterium content is not. The modern contrast You cannot copy the tribal diet without copying the tribal biology. Glyphosate, antibiotics, and processed food have destroyed the first line of microbial deuterium defense. Artificial blue light has replaced the equatorial photon pressure that compensates for dietary deuterium. Industrial GMO food has replaced locally grown, seasonally consistent food sources. Deuterium — a variable almost nobody tracks — regulates cell growth and mitochondrial function. It sits upstream of cancer and everything downstream. Your mitochondria maintain a lower deuterium concentration inside their inner membrane than outside. That gradient is not incidental. It's a feature of normal mitochondrial function. Roman Zubarev — professor of medical proteomics at the Karolinska Institute, trained at Moscow's elite physics institute — has spent years studying what happens when you disturb it. 1. Deuterium As A Cell Growth Regulator Deuterium — heavy hydrogen — regulates cell growth rate in the range of approximately 30–350 ppm. Earth's normal deuterium concentration is around 150 ppm. When cells are deprived of this normal amount, their growth slows down. To test this, Zubarev’s lab used A549 lung cancer cells — currently the most widely used cell line in biology — and exposed them to deuterium-depleted water at about 80 ppm. The result? Cancer cell growth rate dropped by 30%. Once deuterium concentrations step outside of that 30–350 ppm regulatory window, the effects stop being regulatory and start becoming highly detrimental. For example Mars carries approximately 750–1,050 ppm of deuterium—roughly 5 to 7 times Earth's natural concentration. When terrestrial organisms are exposed to Martian deuterium levels, they show significant survival decline. Zubarev’s team conducted a two-year experiment growing small shrimp in isolated environments where the water was modified to contain ~600 ppm of deuterium. They found that the survival rates of the shrimp significantly declined compared to those grown in normal water. 2. The Mitochondrial Mechanism — How Deuterium Depleted Water (DDW) Actually Works Alongside the well-known proton gradient, there is also a deuterium gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Normally, the concentration of deuterium is lower inside the membrane than it is outside. Mitochondrial lipids are naturally deuterium-depleted. When cells are placed in 80 ppm deuterium-depleted water — lower than the normal ~150 ppm outside — the gradient reverses. More deuterium inside the membrane than outside. So how does this reversal suppress growth? This reversal upsets reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. To try and restore equilibrium, the mitochondria rapidly increase their production of ROS. This sudden spike in ROS induces oxidative stress within the cell, which the researchers identified as the primary molecular mechanism that ultimately suppresses the growth of the cells. This is the anti-cancer mechanism. Zubarev: "We have not invented this mechanism — it's very well known." To prove that DDW suppresses cancer cell growth by inducing oxidative stress they added NAC — N-acetylcysteine, a standard antioxidant — to DDW-treated cancer cells. If DDW works through ROS, an antioxidant should cancel the effect. The result? At approximately 2 millimolar NAC, the DDW anti-cancer effect was statistically eliminated. Then they tested the reverse. They combined DDW with auranofin — a drug that induces oxidative stress. If both work through ROS, combining them should produce synergistic effect. The result? At low to medium concentrations, adding the drug to the DDW created a "double whammy effect" where the cell count went down even further. However, at very high concentrations of the drug, the effect of the DDW diminished, which Zubarev explains makes sense because a cell does not need two overwhelming sources of reactive oxygen species to die. Three-layer validation. Published in Molecular and Cellular Proteomics — the top proteomics journal. 3. The Antioxidant Implication Standard health messaging treats ROS as purely bad. Antioxidants good. Oxidative stress bad. Zubarev's data complicates this directly. DDW works by increasing ROS in cancer cells. Antioxidants statistically cancelled the therapeutic effect. Auranofin — an oxidative stress inducer — synergized with DDW against cancer. Important caveat: this finding is in cancer cells, not in healthy humans. Zubarev notes that normal human cells react differently, stating that normal human cells are much less sensitive to DDW. Therefore, the induction of ROS to slow down growth is a therapeutic mechanism specifically observed in fast-growing cancer cells, not a general effect reported for healthy cells. But the blanket "antioxidants are good" narrative fails here. Context determines whether ROS is friend or enemy. 4. You Are Not What You Eat The standard model of nutrition assumes the body passively absorbs its dietary inputs — including isotopic composition. Zubarev's data shows the opposite. The body actively resists changes to its internal isotopic composition. It defends a specific ratio the way it defends pH or temperature. Isotopes modulate their own fractionation — the biological system selectively processes and separates heavy and light isotopes to maintain equilibrium. The isotopic quality of what you eat and drink is a regulated biological input — not a passive one. For example, the deuterium levels found in the proline, hydroxyproline, and collagen of seals are twice as high as the deuterium levels in the surrounding seawater. Because the isotopic concentration in the seals' biological building blocks is double that of their environment, there is no way to attribute this composition simply to their food. 5. Isotopic Resonance — The Order Underlying Life Plot the isotopic masses and abundances of the elements that make up biological molecules — hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen. You'd expect random scatter, a scattered "galaxy" of dots. Instead you find a precise line. Zubarev calls it isotopic resonance. At natural isotopic abundances, biological molecules cluster in a specific ratio that produces the simplest, most efficient molecular conformations. That ratio is the point at which life's chemistry runs fastest. The probability of this pattern appearing by chance is astronomically small. Zubarev — a physicist trained in probability — cannot dismiss it: "This is the line of God, if you want." Life doesn't exist here just because of liquid water and moderate temperature. The Blackwater fish kill - failures in investigating and protecting an EU Special Area of Conservation. We need to move beyond “fisheries” on our Natura 2000 rivers. This video shows the Blackwater River (Cork/Waterford) Special Area of Conservation (SAC) near Mallow, Co. Cork and features critically endangered Freshwater Pearl Mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera). I took these images during a survey I completed in August 2022 on the river. A major fish kill occurred in this stretch of river earlier this month. It is one of the largest fish kills ever recorded in Ireland, with media reports estimating that over 30 km of river were affected. Thousands of fish were killed, and other wildlife was also impacted. Yet to date no cause of the fish kill has been identified. All of the areas affected were within the SAC designated area. The Blackwater River (Cork/Waterford) SAC is designated for a range of aquatic species including Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), Freshwater Pearl Mussel, White-clawed Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes), Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), Brook Lamprey (Lampetra planeri), River Lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis), and Twaite Shad (Alosa fallax). It is also designated for Otter (Lutra lutra), and the river corridor supports a range of other protected species including birds such as Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). Despite this, public reporting and official responses have focused almost exclusively on Brown Trout (Salmo trutta), a species that is not a qualifying interest of the SAC. The investigation was led by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), but having a fisheries agency lead an investigation of a pollution event on a Natura 2000 river is itself part of the problem. The Blackwater is not only a fishery, but also a designated European site. For example, there are no “fisheries” for Freshwater Pearl Mussels, crayfish or lampreys in Ireland. International best practice sets out clearly how fish kills should be investigated. The first 24 hours are critical. Water samples must be collected above, within and below the affected reach, as well as from tributaries, with controls from unaffected areas. Dead and dying fish and invertebrates should be collected immediately for pathology and toxicology. Mortality must be quantified using standardised transects and statistical sampling, not casual tallies. On the Blackwater much of this did not happen. The 24-hour window for water sampling was lost, early speculation about natural causes was made without evidence, and mortality estimates were not carried out to scientific standards. There has been no reported assessment of impacts on Freshwater Pearl Mussels, lampreys or crayfish. There were reports of large numbers of “eels” being killed, and lampreys are often erroneously referred to as eels. Yet there does not seem to have been any formal investigation into how other non-fisheries species were affected. This failure raises a prima facie breach of Article 6(2) of the EU Habitats Directive, which requires Member States to avoid the deterioration of natural habitats and the disturbance of species for which SACs are designated. A pollution event of this magnitude, coupled with the absence of a scientifically robust investigation, amounts to both ecological harm and a failure of governance. An urgent independent review is now required into how fish kills are investigated in Ireland and how our Natura rivers are managed. Rivers such as the Blackwater cannot be treated as fisheries alone. They are legally protected ecosystems of European importance, and the State is obliged to manage and protect them as such.

Every meal from a mammal becomes a delayed reaction three to five hours later. That's why he's down to eggs. Fish is safe. Chicken is safe. Turkey is safe. Alpha-gal is found in nonprimate mammals only. Old World primates lost the gene that makes it about 28 million years ago. Birds and fish never made it in the first place. So the only safe protein comes from species across an evolutionary line drawn before humans existed. For some patients dairy goes too. Gelatin capsules and gummies go. The cancer drug cetuximab, manufactured in a mouse cell line, has triggered fatal first-dose anaphylaxis in alpha-gal patients. Pig heart valves have triggered reactions on the operating table. Between 2010 and 2022 the CDC logged over 110,000 lab-confirmed cases. The actual number sits closer to 450,000 because alpha-gal syndrome isn't nationally reportable and most physicians outside the Southeast don't recognize it. A 2025 analysis of 114 million patient records showed mammalian meat allergy diagnoses rose 5,500% from 2015-2020 to 2021-2025. Climate change pushed Lone Star ticks north of their Southeast range. White-tailed deer populations recovering from near-extinction and second-growth forests fueled it. Suffolk County, Long Island is now a hotspot. Martha's Vineyard hit establishment by 2014. Forestry workers in heavy-tick regions test 20-30% positive for alpha-gal IgE. In summer 2024 a 47-year-old man in New Jersey died after what his wife later remembered as 12 itchy ankle bites. He had assumed they were chiggers. The autopsy went unsolved for months until allergist Thomas Platts-Mills identified it as the first confirmed AGS fatality on record. There are almost certainly more. The trigger food gets eaten three hours before the cardiac event, so nobody connects the steak at dinner to the call to 911 at midnight. Eggs are safe because birds never made the sugar.

The Arkavati River, a key tributary of the Cauvery, has faced severe pollution in recent years. According to Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) data under the National Water Monitoring Programme, microbial pollution (coliform bacteria) in stretches near Kanakapura has reached nearly 350 times the safe limit. Primary causes include: • Untreated industrial effluents discharged from factories and industrial areas. • Untreated domestic sewage from rapid urbanization on Bengaluru’s outskirts. • Agricultural runoff containing pesticides and fertilizers. • Loss of natural wetlands and buffers due to development and quarrying.
