“Psychological incentives and material temptations such as money or new clothes” learn the truth about how #SDF forces recruit #children after abducting them from their families. Girls and boys, some no older than twelve, left their schools and homes and then vanished from their world cut off from their former lives and from their families’ sight. Weeks or even months later, they suddenly reappeared in photographs wearing military uniforms and carrying weapons among the ranks of the #Syrian Democratic Forces (#SDF). In other cases, families received devastating news that their children had been killed on battlefields they did not choose, but were forced into. This raises a critical question: what is the truth behind the #SDF’s recruitment of #children? A dark reality has been documented by local and international human rights organizations, pointing to the forced recruitment of #boys and #girls in areas under #SDF control, often without the knowledge or consent of their #families. According to reports, the methods used to recruit minors vary. Sometimes, as documented by the Syria Justice and Accountability Center, children are invited to attend media or photography courses affiliated with #SDF units, only to never return home. In other cases, reported by the #Syrian Network for #HumanRights, material and moral incentives such as money or new clothes are used to deceive children. There is also a more brutal method: direct kidnapping, carried out by trained and specialized units that seize children from streets or neighborhoods during times when parental supervision is absent. The vulnerability of these children plays a major role in making them easy targets. Poverty, lack of education, and harsh living conditions particularly in displacement camps leave children exposed to organized recruitment efforts. It was found that individuals affiliated with the #SDF, operating under the name of the Revolutionary Youth Movement, encouraged boys and girls in camps to join military training without their parents’ knowledge. Families often lost contact with their children after they left with recruiters and later learned of their recruitment through official notices from #SDF forces stating that the children were undergoing training. The #Syrian #Network for #HumanRights further reported that #SDF forces threatened many families of abducted children to prevent them from reporting cases to the #UnitedNations or #humanrights organizations. Parents were also barred from visiting their children, and those who attempted to do so were insulted or expelled. As a result, families live in a constant state of anxiety and uncertainty. In some cases, the only evidence parents had of their children’s fate were photographs showing them in military uniforms months after their disappearance. Notably, these recruitment campaigns do not distinguish between boys and girls. #Girls are recruited at similar rates, a practice partly attributed to the #SDF’s ideology, which promotes women’s participation in combat as part of its organizational identity, particularly through female units such as the #YPJ. From a legal perspective, the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and human rights. The Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols prohibit the recruitment or involvement of anyone under the age of fifteen in armed conflict, classifying such acts as war crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Despite this, the practice has continued. The #SDF signed an undertaking with #Geneva Call in 2014 prohibiting the use of #child #soldiers, and later signed a #UN action plan in 2019 pledging to take concrete measures to end and prevent child recruitment. In August 2020, it announced the establishment of an Office for the Protection of #Children in Armed Conflict in areas under its control. However, reality has contradicted these commitments. United Nations annual reports documented continued child recruitment in #SDF-controlled areas, with between 130 and 285 verified cases annually from 2019 to 2023. In 2022 alone, the situation worsened dramatically, with 637 documented cases. This escalation coincided with signs of declining commitment to protective measures, including the closure of a #child protection office in late 2022, raising serious doubts about the #SDF’s seriousness in implementing its promises on the ground. Families of recruited children say these offices brought little change. Complaints were repeatedly filed, yet families received no clear answers or definitive information regarding the whereabouts or fate of their children.

The Silent Siege: When the Armed Forces Become the New Frontier of RSS Ideology In this powerful episode of The Caravan Longview, Sushant Singh — a former Indian Army officer with nearly two decades of service (including deployments in Jammu & Kashmir and as a UN Military Observer), now Consulting Editor at The Caravan, Lecturer at Yale University, and an award-winning journalist — joins Hartosh Singh Bal to examine a deeply concerning trend. They analyse the growing politicisation and saffronisation of India’s armed forces since 2014 and the shifting relationship between the military and the Indian state. The discussion argues that these changes go beyond mere visibility — they signal a deeper transformation in the very character of the military, moving away from its traditional apolitical, secular, and constitutional ethos towards greater alignment with majoritarian nationalist Hindutva symbolism and the Sangh Parivar’s political messaging. Sushant Singh raises a grave alarm that RSS ideology and majoritarian Hindutva nationalist symbolism are gaining prominent influence within the military ecosystem — from changes in imagery and leadership narratives to recruitment policies and public projection. This ideological shift risks eroding the neutrality and professionalism that have earned our armed forces global respect. From policies like Agnipath to the use of armed forces for electoral gains, the episode raises serious questions: Can a military increasingly drawn into partisan politics retain its professional neutrality and effectiveness? What does this mean for Indian democracy when civilian institutions weaken while the military’s profile is elevated for ideological purposes? Our soldiers have always been the pride of the nation because they remained above politics and loyal only to the Constitution, not any ideology. Any erosion of that apolitical character should worry every Indian who values democratic institutions. Watch the full episode here: This should be a wake-up call for every Indian who values democratic institutions and the apolitical integrity of our armed forces. Situation is precarious- A politicised military may win elections today, but it threatens the soul of Indian democracy tomorrow — while the nation remains dangerously oblivious. #IndianArmy #PoliticisationOfArmy #RSSIdeology #TheCaravanLongview #DemocracyUnderThreat #ArmedForces

War in #Yemen #SITREP | For now, Houthi advances appear to have been halted across several fronts, while some recent gains have been rolled back by government-aligned forces. But the fighting is far from over. Both sides are repositioning, reinforcing contested sectors, and continuing artillery, drone, and missile operations. Three senior commanders from Yemen's anti-Houthi forces remain at the center of the current operations. They are Lt. Gen. طارق محمد صالح, commander of the National Resistance Forces المقاومة الوطنية, Maj. Gen. Abdulrahman al-Lahji, commander of the National Shield Forces قوات درع الوطن, and Maj. Gen. Hamdi Shukri, commander of the 4th Military Region. A video message from Maj. Gen. Shukri has circulated widely on Yemeni social media. Shukri said his forces would continue the battle "until Yemen is cleansed of Iranian influence." He also claimed that Houthi forces were in a state of collapse and that government-aligned forces had achieved major battlefield successes. His comments reflect his assessment of the fighting and should not be treated as independent confirmation of a wider Houthi collapse. The rural western Ta'izz front is quieter for now as both sides reorganize and bring in reinforcements following the recent fighting. Artillery fire, drone activity, and localized clashes nevertheless continue across several sectors. In western Ta'izz, National Resistance forces reported heavy clashes with Houthi forces in the Al-Kadhah sector. Pro-government media also reported artillery strikes against Houthi positions and troop concentrations around Al-Barh, Saqm, and other parts of the western coastal front. Local sources reported Houthi artillery fire on villages around Ash-Shurajah in Jabal Habashi District, with the main road reportedly cut and the movement of displaced civilians disrupted. Another report said a woman and one of her relatives were killed when a bus carrying displaced civilians was struck in Jabal Habashi. The fighting has also extended toward Al-Ashruh in Jabal Habashi, as Houthi forces shelled the outskirts of Al-Ashruh in western Ta'izz with artillery. Farther south along the Red Sea coast, Houthi mortar fire against Al-Haymah village in southern Hudaydah, with several displaced civilians reportedly wounded. In Mawza District, western Ta'izz, a child was killed by a missile strike on Al-Murakh village. The National Resistance also claimed that bodies recovered following fighting on the western coast included members of Somalia's al-Shabaab who had fought alongside Houthi forces. Its military media said documents and personal belongings found with the bodies supported the identification. The claim remains unverified. From the published material alone, it is not possible to establish whether the dead were Somali fighters, African Yemenis, or individuals of another background. Fighting has also been reported beyond western Ta'izz. In southern Marib, pro-government forces released footage showing artillery and drone strikes against Houthi positions, artillery sites, vehicles, and sniper positions. In Al-Bayda, local sources reported airstrikes against Houthi positions around Jabal Sawda Ghurab in Al-Zahir District. Houthi forces were also reported to have shelled a tribal gathering in the Aynat Al Barman area. In Al-Jawf, forces belonging to Yemen's internationally recognized government said they struck Houthi personnel and military capabilities at Al-Labnat camp. A military spokesman described the attack as a response to recent Houthi escalation and said newly introduced capabilities were used. The current picture is therefore one of a Houthi offensive that has lost momentum in several areas, with some advances reversed, but not a concluded battle. Front lines remain active, reinforcements continue to move, and further attempts by either side to regain the initiative should be expected.

Mazloum Abdi's European tour and the limits of European influence SDF commander Mazloum Abdi this past week visited several European countries, including Italy and France. In Paris, he held meetings with French officials to discuss developments in Syria and the continuing integration process between the SDF and Damascus. • The tour caused controversy in pro-government Syrian media. Some outlets cited Syrian diplomatic sources as saying that Abdi travelled without prior consultation with or approval from Damascus, describing the visit as a violation of the integration agreement. • The SDF has not been formally dissolved, and Abdi remains its commander during the transitional integration period. Damascus continues to deal with him in that capacity, with Syrian officials and government-linked media still referring to him as the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces. His foreign travel therefore does not clearly violate the agreement. The SDF and its civilian institutions continue to exist while their gradual incorporation into Syrian state structures proceeds, and Abdi retains a distinct political and military position throughout. • The visits carry symbolic importance, but France has no physical leverage in northern Syria. With US forces withdrawn, there is no allied military framework within which French engagement could be anchored. France cannot deploy forces, secure supply lines or meaningfully deter pressure from Damascus or Turkey. • France's domestic constraints compound its external weakness. Economic deterioration, internal political pressures and the migration debate make European governments more inclined to seek workable arrangements with Damascus than to confront it. • Turkey holds the strongest immediate external position by a considerable margin. Geographic proximity, deep intelligence penetration, established local networks, military reach and a demonstrated willingness to act give Ankara tools that no European state can match in northern Syria. • The remaining SDF pocket is geographically incoherent and demographically vulnerable. Most Kurdish-majority cities lie within a few kilometres of the Turkish border. Hasakah, the only city with some distance from Turkey, has considerable Arab depth. The area cannot be held against sustained indirect pressure. • Direct military action may not be required. Turkey and Damascus may be able to achieve their objectives through intelligence operations, recruitment of local informants and defectors, sabotage and selective drone strikes, eroding SDF cohesion below the threshold of overt provocation and hollowing out its organisational capacity through the integration process itself. Recent reporting of sleeper cells near Qamishli illustrates how exposed the SDF's position already is. • Israel's influence does not reach the north. Whatever leverage Tel Aviv holds over Damascus is concentrated in the south and tied to its campaign against Iranian entrenchment. In northern Syria, Israeli influence is wholly overshadowed by Turkey's. • European engagement may produce limited influence over specific details: representation arrangements, treatment of former SDF personnel, administrative appointments, cultural rights and the pace of institutional transfers. This is the realistic ceiling. • The SDF retains agency. Its internal cohesion, negotiating strategy, political manoeuvring and capacity to exploit divisions among its opponents will shape the pace and final form of integration. The prolonged process also leaves room for regional developments to alter the balance. Growing discussion of possible US pressure on Damascus to move against Hezbollah in Lebanon could place further strain on Ahmed al-Sharaa's still-consolidating government. A wider confrontation or internal crisis could distract Damascus, weaken its centralising momentum and allow the SDF to recover some negotiating leverage, preserving elements of de facto autonomy through locally concentrated security forces, administrative continuity and political representation. Whether that materialises will depend on disciplined leadership, internal cohesion and a more effective political strategy than Damascus can easily contain. • Any durable SDF role in Syria requires accommodation with Turkey. No amount of European diplomatic support can substitute for that. More:

Iran Successful in Stopping this Wave of U.S.-Israeli Attempts to Destabilize the Country Foreign Minister Araghchi stated that peaceful protests lasted three days, during which the government held direct talks with economic activists. However, armed terrorist groups soon infiltrated the demonstrations, hijacking their original peaceful nature. Evidence shows attacks on security forces were staged to inflate casualties, a demand from Trump, and most fatalities, including security personnel, were shot from behind. Armed attackers also killed the injured in ambulances, burned 53 mosques, and sabotaged public infrastructure. Araghchi presented diplomats with footage of attackers shooting and destroying government buildings, emphasizing that this was not a protest but a terrorist war on Iran. He confirmed U.S. and Israeli involvement, with Mossad and its affiliates linked to killings and riots. While the West publicly sympathizes with these armed groups, it remains silent on Israeli crimes in Gaza. Tehran’s million-strong march has already begun, drawing a large crowd, while rallies in dozens of other cities are also underway. The rallies are being held in support of the government and against what participants describe as U.S. and Israeli interference, including alleged backing of groups accused of spreading chaos and attempting to destabilize Iran. Funerals were held for police officers and civilians who were martyred in these foreign-backed terrorist operations. Despite the attacks, Iran successfully stopped the first wave of U.S.-Israeli efforts to destabilize the country. Security forces have full control over the situation, and internet services will be restored soon. Araghchi stressed that Iran is ready for serious, equitable negotiations, but will not accept imposed demands. The United States and Israel are expected to continue their interference, but Iran will not back down. The country remains fully prepared to confront any aggression, while also keeping the door open for dialogue. Today’s events are part of a broader continuation of U.S.-Israeli aggression, and Tehran asserts its readiness for both war and negotiation.

Forum paid rich tribute to the supreme sacrifices of shuhadas including officers and men of the Armed Forces, Law Enforcement Agencies and Shuhada from civil society who laid their lives for the safety, security and dignity of the country. The forum offered Fateha for the shuhadas’ departed souls. Forum asserted, "The State of Pakistan and Armed Forces will always keep Shuhadas and their families in highest esteem and will continue to honor them and their sacrifices with utmost respect and dignity". Participants were briefed on prevalent environment, challenges to security i.e. both internal & external and own operational preparedness in response to evolving threats, both traditional and non-traditional. Forum was also briefed on the structural changes and niche technologies being incorporated to enhance operational preparedness besides up-gradation of essential logistic infrastructure corresponding to emerging security imperatives. COAS reiterated “Pakistan Army will remain committed towards their national obligations of safeguarding territorial integrity and sovereignty” of the country. He further said, “People of Pakistan and their deep bondage with the Armed Forces is and will remain central to all our undertakings and events of 25th May were a clear manifestation of same”. Forum concluded that “Unfounded and baseless allegations on Law Enforcement Agencies and Security Forces for custodial torture, human rights abuses and stifling of political activities are meant to mislead the people and malign Armed Forces in order to achieve trivial vested political interests”. "Hostile forces and their abettors have been trying hard to create societal division and confusion through fake news and propaganda but all such designs will continue to be defeated with the full support of the nation, InshaAllah.” COAS asserted. The forum while condemning the 9th May Black Day incidents in the strictest sense reiterated their firm resolve that desecrators of Shuhada Monuments, Jinnah House and attackers of military installations would certainly be brought to justice speedily under the Pakistan Army Act and Official Secret Act which are the derivatives of the Constitution of Pakistan. In this regard, efforts to create distortions and attempts to take refuge behind imaginary and mirage Human Rights Violations to create smoke screen for hiding the ugly faces of all involved, are absolutely futile and do not stand the abundantly collected irrefutable evidences. It has been further stressed that, while the legal trials of perpetrators and instigators have commenced, it is time that noose of law is also tightened around the planners and masterminds who mounted the hate ripened and politically driven rebellion against the state and state institutions to achieve their nefarious design of creating chaos in the country. Forum also resolved that endeavours by any quarter to create obstructions and stymie the conclusive defeat of ill design of inimical forces will be dealt with iron hands. COAS stressed on maintaining high standards of professionalism and motivation during operations and achieving excellence during training of their formations. He commended the commanders for their constant focus on the wellbeing and high state of morale of their soldiers who remain the foundation of Army’s operational readiness. Forum concluded by affirming resolve to render all sacrifices necessary for the security and stability of the country with the perpetual support of the proud people of Pakistan.
