The Armed Forces of Pakistan have serious concerns on the safe havens and liberty of action available to TTP in Afghanistan. It is expected that interim Afghan Government would not allow the use of its soil to perpetrate terror against any country, in the real sense and in line with commitments made in Doha Agreement. The involvement of Afghan nationals in acts of terrorism in Pakistan is another important concern that needs to be addressed. Such attacks are intolerable and would elicit effective response from the Security Forces of Pakistan. Girls and boys, some no older than twelve, left their schools and homes and then vanished from their world cut off from their former lives and from their families’ sight. Weeks or even months later, they suddenly reappeared in photographs wearing military uniforms and carrying weapons among the ranks of the #Syrian Democratic Forces (#SDF). In other cases, families received devastating news that their children had been killed on battlefields they did not choose, but were forced into. This raises a critical question: what is the truth behind the #SDF’s recruitment of #children? A dark reality has been documented by local and international human rights organizations, pointing to the forced recruitment of #boys and #girls in areas under #SDF control, often without the knowledge or consent of their #families. According to reports, the methods used to recruit minors vary. Sometimes, as documented by the Syria Justice and Accountability Center, children are invited to attend media or photography courses affiliated with #SDF units, only to never return home. In other cases, reported by the #Syrian Network for #HumanRights, material and moral incentives such as money or new clothes are used to deceive children. There is also a more brutal method: direct kidnapping, carried out by trained and specialized units that seize children from streets or neighborhoods during times when parental supervision is absent. The vulnerability of these children plays a major role in making them easy targets. Poverty, lack of education, and harsh living conditions particularly in displacement camps leave children exposed to organized recruitment efforts. In some cases, the only evidence parents had of their children’s fate were photographs showing them in military uniforms months after their disappearance. Mazloum Abdi's European tour and the limits of European influence SDF commander Mazloum Abdi this past week visited several European countries, including Italy and France. In Paris, he held meetings with French officials to discuss developments in Syria and the continuing integration process between the SDF and Damascus. • The tour caused controversy in pro-government Syrian media. Some outlets cited Syrian diplomatic sources as saying that Abdi travelled without prior consultation with or approval from Damascus, describing the visit as a violation of the integration agreement. • The SDF has not been formally dissolved, and Abdi remains its commander during the transitional integration period. Damascus continues to deal with him in that capacity, with Syrian officials and government-linked media still referring to him as the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces. His foreign travel therefore does not clearly violate the agreement. The SDF and its civilian institutions continue to exist while their gradual incorporation into Syrian state structures proceeds, and Abdi retains a distinct political and military position throughout. • The visits carry symbolic importance, but France has no physical leverage in northern Syria. With US forces withdrawn, there is no allied military framework within which French engagement could be anchored. France cannot deploy forces, secure supply lines or meaningfully deter pressure from Damascus or Turkey. • France's domestic constraints compound its external weakness. Economic deterioration, internal political pressures and the migration debate make European governments more inclined to seek workable arrangements with Damascus than to confront it. • Turkey holds the strongest immediate external position by a considerable margin. Geographic proximity, deep intelligence penetration, established local networks, military reach and a demonstrated willingness to act give Ankara tools that no European state can match in northern Syria. • The remaining SDF pocket is geographically incoherent and demographically vulnerable. Most Kurdish-majority cities lie within a few kilometres of the Turkish border. Hasakah, the only city with some distance from Turkey, has considerable Arab depth. The area cannot be held against sustained indirect pressure. • Direct military action may not be required. Turkey and Damascus may be able to achieve their objectives through intelligence operations, recruitment of local informants and defectors, sabotage and selective drone strikes, eroding SDF cohesion below the threshold of overt provocation and hollowing out its organisational capacity through the integration process itself. Recent reporting of sleeper cells near Qamishli illustrates how exposed the SDF's position already is. • Israel's influence does not reach the north. Whatever leverage Tel Aviv holds over Damascus is concentrated in the south and tied to its campaign against Iranian entrenchment. In northern Syria, Israeli influence is wholly overshadowed by Turkey's. • European engagement may produce limited influence over specific details: representation arrangements, treatment of former SDF personnel, administrative appointments, cultural rights and the pace of institutional transfers. This is the realistic ceiling. • The SDF retains agency. Its internal cohesion, negotiating strategy, political manoeuvring and capacity to exploit divisions among its opponents will shape the pace and final form of integration. The prolonged process also leaves room for regional developments to alter the balance. Growing discussion of possible US pressure on Damascus to move against Hezbollah in Lebanon could place further strain on Ahmed al-Sharaa's still-consolidating government. A wider confrontation or internal crisis could distract Damascus, weaken its centralising momentum and allow the SDF to recover some negotiating leverage, preserving elements of de facto autonomy through locally concentrated security forces, administrative continuity and political representation. Whether that materialises will depend on disciplined leadership, internal cohesion and a more effective political strategy than Damascus can easily contain. • Any durable SDF role in Syria requires accommodation with Turkey. This is the realistic ceiling. • The SDF retains agency. Its internal cohesion, negotiating strategy, political manoeuvring and capacity to exploit divisions among its opponents will shape the pace and final form of integration. The prolonged process also leaves room for regional developments to alter the balance. Growing discussion of possible US pressure on Damascus to move against Hezbollah in Lebanon could place further strain on Ahmed al-Sharaa's still-consolidating government. A wider confrontation or internal crisis could distract Damascus, weaken its centralising momentum and allow the SDF to recover some negotiating leverage, preserving elements of de facto autonomy through locally concentrated security forces, administrative continuity and political representation. Whether that materialises will depend on disciplined leadership, internal cohesion and a more effective political strategy than Damascus can easily contain. • Any durable SDF role in Syria requires accommodation with Turkey. In the West, we are often led to believe that the Poles gave in easily to the invasion in 1939, and the Blitzkrieg destroyed the incompetent Polish Army. That's far from the truth. Although the Polish Army wasn't up to par with the Germans, that doesn't mean they didn't resist and put up a fight. Part of this was German propaganda meant to instill fear into other countries. Also, any assessment of the invasion must analyze the Soviet invasion and the Slovak invasion in which the Poles were invaded by three armies. Between the German invasion of Poland on September 1st and October 2nd, 1939, the Polish Army destroyed approximately 33% of German armored cars and 25% of German air power. During that time, the Germans had to use more than twice the amount of ammunition, artillery, shells, and bombs than they did eight months later when they defeated the French and British forces within six weeks. The Polish did not give in easily, but they could not defeat overwhelming forces; no one could. It was an unwinnable war. The Polish would go on to create an exceptional underground Army and continue their fight, aiding the Allies with significant material that would help shorten the war. They would also be part of the fighting abroad by producing the fourth-largest Allied Army playing a role in some of the most important campaigns and battles of the war.

Fano’s Attack in North Wollo �Fano’s attack on government security forces in North Wollo led to the disintegration of an ENDF division (the 102nd) in just two days of battle. This dramatic outcome was shocking not only because it highlighted Fano’s growing strength, but more importantly because it revealed the fragile state of the ENDF itself. How could a heavily armed division—deployed to face much stronger Tigrayan forces—collapse under attack from lightly armed, loosely coordinated Fano units? The regime’s cadres argue that the operation was planned and supported by Tigrayan and Eritrean forces. Even if we accept that claim, it does not explain OLA’s repeated success in capturing hundreds of ENDF soldiers in West and East Shewa, nor Fano’s similar gains in Gojjam. Alleged external support cannot sufficiently account for these rapid defeats and disintegrations. Instead, the evidence points to a deeper deterioration in the will and morale of the government’s fighting force. This is hardly a secret. For months, soldiers at the front have publicly lamented the war, questioned its purpose, complained about lack of supplies, and accused senior officials of living lavishly while troops are denied even basic necessities. Morale is collapsing, and many of the soldiers deployed are forcibly recruited and given only minimal, inadequate training. This better explains why ENDF soldiers often surrender en masse after brief clashes with rebels who are fewer in number and more lightly armed. 2. OLA’s new front in the East �The OLA has also achieved a breakthrough by opening a new front in Eastern Hararge in recent weeks. Instead of confining operations to the more hospitable West and South, the OLA is repositioning forces and experienced commanders toward the Center and East, along key tributary roads leading to the capital. In the last six months, clashes between OLA and government forces have intensified across West, East, and North Shewa, East Arsi, West Hararge, and now East Hararge. Despite multiple government offensives, the OLA remains entrenched, roaming freely in rural areas beyond major towns and highways. If the OLA sustains and expands its operations in these regions, it could increasingly squeeze and choke the regime. Given the ENDF’s collapsing morale and the regime’s growing difficulty in recruiting new soldiers, the odds are on the OLA side. These latest developments in the armed conflict do not necessarily mean we are about to witness the end the contest between Abiy’s regime and rebel movements. Located at the northern tip of Africa, Ceuta sits in one of the most strategically sensitive areas between Africa and Europe, just across the Strait of Gibraltar from the European side. What happens around Ceuta is bigger than a single border crossing. It highlights the growing challenge of managing migration, protecting borders, and maintaining effective security policies at Europe’s external frontier. Spain has every right to manage its borders, but uncontrolled migration can create serious political, economic, and security pressures if governments fail to maintain effective systems. This also raises a broader question for Washington. The United States and Spain are NATO allies, and their relationship extends well beyond Europe. Military bases, defense cooperation, intelligence sharing, and access to strategic facilities all matter when assessing the strength of an alliance. If an ally’s policies create disagreements over military cooperation or operational access, Washington has every reason to review those arrangements and determine whether they continue to serve U.S. strategic interests. At the same time, NATO members have responsibilities toward collective defense. Defense spending, readiness, burden sharing, and reliable cooperation should remain central to the alliance. This is not about religion, ethnicity, or nationality. It is about secure borders, responsible migration policies, strong alliances, and protecting national interests. The United States should continue to work with its European allies, while making sure its security commitments and strategic partnerships serve American interests.

🇪🇹 Thousands in Addis Ababa Protest Alleged Forced Recruitment in Tigray Thousands rallied in Ethiopia’s capital on Saturday against an alleged campaign of forced conscription by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), in a pro-government protest organized by a coalition of Tigrayan opposition parties. Tigray is a mountainous region in northern Ethiopia, bordering Eritrea and home to some 6 million people. From 2020 to 2022, it was the center of one of this century’s deadliest wars. The TPLF had dominated Ethiopia’s national government for nearly three decades before falling out with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, whose rise to power in 2018 ended the party’s dominance. Fighting erupted in November 2020, drawing in Ethiopian federal forces and troops from neighboring Eritrea, the TPLF’s longtime enemy. Estimates of the dead range from roughly 160,000 to as high as 600,000, with many dying from direct fighting, and also from starvation and the collapse of healthcare during the war and federal blockade. A November 2022 peace agreement ended the fighting but left major underlying disputes unresolved. Now the region is sliding back toward confrontation. The TPLF reasserted control over Tigray’s political administration on May 5, displacing the federal-backed interim administration established under the peace deal, and issued a June proclamation mandating military service. Human Rights Watch reported on July 6 that Tigrayan authorities and forces have been abducting and forcibly recruiting civilians, including boys as young as 15, through nighttime raids on homes and recruitment drives at offices and gold-mining sites.
