Want to work in Sports? Your Competition Is Cheering. You Should Be Building. The 12 team playoff bracket is set, and today is a perfect reminder that expansion does not just change football. It changes work. Today’s slate: @AlabamaFTBL vs @OU_Football @AggieFootball vs @CanesFootball @GreenWaveFB vs @OleMissFB @oregonfootball vs @JMUFootball Here is the real shift. With 136 FBS teams, the old format gave roughly 2.9% of programs playoff access. The new format gives roughly 8.8%. That is not just more teams playing. That is more travel, content, ticketing, sponsorship activation, donor touchpoints, hospitality, security, student staff, and broadcast coordination. If you are a sport management student, do not “watch the games.” Use them as a live case study and build something you can show in an interview. Pick one of today’s games and produce ONE portfolio piece by Monday: 1. Event Ops Map (1 page): list every department touched by a playoff home game, then write the top 3 failure points for each (gates, credentialing, transportation, halftime, postgame flow). 2. Sponsor Activation Audit: identify 5 sponsor moments you see on broadcast and in stadium photos, then write how you would improve fan interaction and measurement. 3. 48 Hour Run of Show: build a basic timeline from “team arrives” to “stadium clears,” including who owns what. 4. Staffing Plan: create a simple staffing chart, roles, shift times, and escalation path. 5. Debrief Template: what metrics would you review the next morning (NPS, wait times, scan rate, merch per cap, incident log, sponsor deliverables hit rate). The playoff committee expanded the bracket. Your job is to expand your proof. Because the truth is, opportunity does not reward hype. It rewards the student who can say: “I built the plan. Here is what I would do. Here is what I learned.” #CFBPlayoff #SportsBusiness #SportManagement #EventOperations
